SAYRE - The Sayre Borough Council voted on Thursday at their regular meeting to adopt the borough's 2010 budget.

The $6,377,555 total budget includes a .25 mil tax increase, according to budget documents, as well as a $5 per quarter increase in the borough's residential sewer rate. Council voted unanimously to approve the budget, and also voted unanimously to set the borough's tax rate at 10.37 mils and the residential sewer rate at $89 per EDU per quarter.

Councilman Bob Dydynski noted that the increase in the sewer rate was necessary because of increases in the borough's sewer debt payments.

In other business, council voted to advertise specifications for a bank stabilization project along Island Pond in the borough. The project will consist of a 10-foot wide strip of rip-rap along the bank of the pond, Borough Manager Dave Jarrett said. The project's purpose is to halt erosion of the pond's bank.

Jarrett also reported that bids for the borough's department of public works building project would be accepted up until Dec. 1, although the original deadline was for Nov. 24. There are 14 companies that have expressed interest in the project to construct a new DPW building for the borough, Jarrett said.

Jarrett also said that the borough had received 20 trees to be planted in the borough, and that planting work would begin today.

Council also voted to extend an offer of employment to Bruce Hoffman as a full-time Patrol Officer Probationary for the Sayre Police Department effective Jan. 2, 2010. Hoffman has done an excellent job as a part-time officer for the borough previously, Mayor Denny Thomas said.
