WYSOX - People in central Bradford County and the Valley helped the Bradford County Humane Society (BCHS) as they took part in the 12th annual "Shop for Pete" event on Saturday.

"Overall, I think we did a good job today," Carmen Arey, BCHS business manager, said of the donations received through the drive.

It was held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the P&C at the Bradford Town Center in Wysox and the P&C stores on Elmira Street and Keystone Avenue in Sayre.

Shoppers were given the shelter's "wish list," and were encouraged to pick up one or two things from the list and drop it in a bin on the way out of the store.

"Those donations help the shelter get by in the winter when donations are lower because everyone is thinking about Christmas and stuff," Arey said.

Arey said the Wysox store was "amazing." The bin was full twice in the first hour and was full at noon and again at 2 p.m., she said.

As a gesture of gratitude, Arey thanked Ardyth Gressel, floral manager at the store, for promoting the event and making announcements throughout the day asking people to donate.

"I know the economy is tough, but people have come through for us and I think it's great," Gressel said. "The animals need us."

The Elmira Street store in Sayre, meanwhile, was "hopping," Arey said.

At the Keystone Avenue store in Sayre, however, it was kind of slow. She said business, however, at the location in general was slower than the other two stores, so that meant less donations there.

She also noted that the inventory work went smoothly this year as volunteers put the donations away.

Arey said there were a lot of donations of dog and cat food, plus cleaning supplies like bleach, which the shelter uses to disinfect.

She said the monetary donations haven't yet been counted.

Betty Snyder of Ulster made one as she gave the shelter a check for $25. And there was a reason for her generosity.

"I love dogs."
