Social Security Office will reopen Nov. 1
The Social Security Administration will reopen its Towanda office in temporary space at 1 Elizabeth Street (Progress Plaza) on Tuesday, Nov. 1. The entrance to the temporary office, located in Suite 14 on the second floor of the building, is on Main Street, not Elizabeth Street. Office hours are 9 a.m. - 3 p.m., Monday - Friday, except federal holidays.
The permanent Social Security office on the first floor of the building remains closed until further notice because of flood damage.
Aurelia Serrano-Wilson, the Towanda District Manager, said the temporary space on the second floor will not be accessible to people with disabilities for a few weeks while the building elevator is repaired. "We apologize for the temporary inconvenience, but wanted to restore a full-service office to the people of the Towanda area as soon as possible. Until the elevator is repaired, people who require face-to-face service and are unable to walk up the steps will be able to call us from the first floor and someone will come down to serve them."
Most Social Security services do not require a visit to an office. For example, anyone wishing to apply for benefits, sign up for direct deposit, replace a Medicare card, obtain a proof of income letter or report a change of address or telephone number may do so at www.socialsecurity.gov or by dialing Social Security's toll-free number: 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778).
