ATHENS - The Athens Area School District board of education Tuesday approved the appointment of Craig Stage as the district's next interim superintendent.

Stage, currently the district's director of educational programs, will begin serving as interim superintendent July 1. He will receive a salary of $100,000, according to information provided by the district.

Stage will succeed Donald Butler, who has been serving as substitute superintendent since September 2013 while Diane Place is out on medical leave.

Board members Tuesday also moved to hire a temporary director of special education through BLaST Intermediate Unit 17. Jim Wojcak will fill the role on an as-needed basis at the rate of $400 a day, effective May 14.

During Tuesday's meeting, business manager Laura Perry informed the board of a program she would like to take advantage of in the district.

The intermediate unit has a partnership with Source4Teachers, a provider of substitute staff to schools in Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Through the partnership, any district in the unit may outsource the process of finding substitute professional and support staff to fill absences, Perry said.

The district would pay a fee to participate in the program, Perry said. However, because Source4Teachers would employ the substitutes and not the district directly, the district stands to save in insurance costs following the implementation of the Affordable Care Act, she said.

Board member Lonnie Stethers said members of the board's business and finance committee "grilled" Perry on the program. "We were pleased with what we heard," he said.

Perry said she will bring a full presentation on the program to the board's next meeting, scheduled for May 13.
