Marshall (From left) Karen Brennan, president of the Athens Area School Board, district Superintendent Doug Ulkins and board member Jim Priester discuss school finances Tuesday during the school board meeting. Ulkins said the next budget meeting is scheduled within a few weeks, but things remain uncertain because of loss of local income caused by the annoucement that Ingersoll Rand will be closing its doors, and other factors.

District Superintendent Doug Ulkins addressed a concern expressed during the Athens Area School Board meeting Tuesday, concerning the recent announcement that Ingersoll Rand will soon be moving its operation out of the area.

Ulkins responded to the concern, which was voiced during the public comment time of the meeting. He said that the news is certainly going to be a factor that the board will have to look at. Ulkins said this is not the only situation involving possible loss of revenue the board has to deal with - pointing out that Mills Pride has taken the district to court to challenge a recent tax reassessment.

"Yeah, we're keeping a very close eye on all that," Ulkins explained.

The superintendent also reported that a budget meeting is scheduled within a few weeks. However, he said that things are very "fluid" now because it is unknown what kind of revenue the district can expect to receive from the state.

In other business, the board heard a presentation about unique event sponsored by the district's Future Business Leaders of America.

Athens student and FBLA member Meagan Nowacoski explained that Williams Auto approached them and the Sayre FBLA to create a grass roots campaign for a specific auto group. Nowacoski said they took Scion brand of cars, while Sayre took Williams Auto.

Part of the rules, Nowacoski explained, was they could only use local and family owned businesses to help the community.

FBLA member Anna Vine said their project will include a "Battle of the Bands," a car show, and a hip-hop concert scheduled for March 27 at Tioga Downs. FBLA member Hannah Harvey Sampson said six bands will be competing at the event, which will be judged by Steel Sound Records out of Pittsburgh.

Nowacoski said the Athens FBLA will be awarded $2,000 for participating in the project, and receive an additional $500 if their project scores higher than the Sayre FBLA project.

Also during the meeting, Karen Whyte reported that the annual Arts Fest is scheduled for May 1.
