ATHENS TWP. - The board of supervisors Wednesday approved plans for a proposed Applebee's restaurant at Elmira and Clinton streets.

Supervisors unanimously voted to grant preliminary approval to the plans contingent upon the receipt of a storm water maintenance agreement, sign permit and highway occupancy permits from the township and the state Department of Transportation.

The 5,285-square-foot, 208-seat restaurant is planned for the lot, a 2.3-acre portion of the former DeSisti Trailer Court site.

The planning commission noted 18 deficiencies in the plans upon reviewing them earlier this month, said commission member Clif Cheeks. Issues that have since been resolved in the plans include fencing around a storm water infiltration basin and along the eastern side of the property, which abuts a residential zone, as well as the removal of 11 parking spaces, Cheeks said.

The pending highway occupancy permits will allow for sidewalks to be constructed along Elmira and Clinton streets and for entry and exit off Clinton Street. Two existing driveways to the property from Elmira Street will be closed off.

Officials representing T.L. Cannon Companies, the restaurant's franchisee, said in June that the restaurant is expected to employ between 70 and 90 people.
