SAYRE - They called themselves the Misfits.

This group of competitors - Bill Stevens, Lorri Stevens, Eric Huston, Gene Millard, and Paul Millard - was one of the many teams showing up Sunday at the Best Western Grand Victorian Inn in Sayre for the team trivia tournament to benefit the HIV/AIDS Support Network, based in Sayre.

Lorri Stevens said the event was pretty important, considering the cause. And it was fun, too, she added.

They take part each year.

Program Director Paul Ingersoll said it was the 11th annual tournament.

"There is quite a following of regulars who look forward to this every year," he said.

This year, the winner of the tournament was The AG Amigos. The team is made up of John Mras; John Mras, Jr.; Sam Balcom; and Bill Howells. The team members, who won a $100 first prize, are from Sayre as well as the Corning and Bath, N.Y. areas.

The tournament raised a little more than $1,000 this year, Ingersoll said, adding that everyone enjoyed themselves. He said he was happy with the amount.

Ingersoll noted that the money raised benefits people living with HIV/AIDS in the four counties the program serves, which are Bradford, Sullivan, Tioga and Potter counties in Pennsylvania.

It provides them help with such things as medical costs, prescriptions, rent, and utilities, he said.

He noted the assistance is helpful to people affected by HIV/AIDS because many of them are low-income or on disability.

"With the rising costs of fuel oil, gas, rent, food, prescriptions, and healthcare, it benefits them in that way," he said.

A total of 108 people participated this year on 18 teams, Ingersoll said.

He thanked all the businesses in the community that donated items to be raffled off, the Best Western Grand Victorian Inn for donating the ballroom for the tournament, and also Hit N Run Entertainment for providing DJ services.
