Sign ups scheduled for Apalachin Youth Athletic Association

The Apalachin Youth Athletic Association (AYAA) would like to extend an invitation to all children in all the surrounding areas to come and join them this year for a T-ball, baseball and softball and teener league experience.

They would like to open up the league to all children from Tioga County, Broome County and northeastern Pennsylvania. This is the league's 52nd year of providing an amazing experience for children of all ages, and AYAA realizes that all kids should have an opportunity to play.

This year's signups will be held at the Apalachin Fire Department (Station One) on Pennsylvania Avenue on the following dates: Feb. 16 and 17 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Feb. 23 and 24 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., and

March 9 and 10 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Downtown Nichols receives Main Street Program Award

Congratulations are due to Tioga County for being selected as a recipient of the 2012 New York Main Street (NYMS) Program.

The 2012 NYMS Program will fund the targeted Village of Nichols Downtown Revitalization Program. The application for $250,000 was fully funded. It will allow a grant for a portion of the costs of interior and exterior renovations of properties within the Village of Nichols downtown business district. Along with this, Streetscape Enhancements including placement of benches, bike racks, planters, historic signage and plaques and planting of trees in the downtown will be funded with this grant.

The Village of Nichols Board of Trustees, along with the partnership and support of the Tioga County Grant Administrator Teresa Saraceno, Village of Nichols Code Enforcement, Tioga County Chamber of Commerce, Tioga County Tourism, NYSERDA, Tioga Opportunities, Inc. Weatherization Program and Community Care Network of Nichols helped make this NYMS Program application competitive and successful. Nichols Mayor LeeAnn Tinney stated her appreciation to Saraceno for putting the grant application together on behalf of the Village.

"These funds will provide a much needed boost to our downtown," said Tinney. She continued, "The partnership between the county and our Village is a great example of how we can work together to make a difference. We are very pleased to have been awarded the grant and are looking forward to the improvements it will bring to our downtown."

Tracy Monell, Tioga County legislator for the Nichols area, commented that this selection was, "Due to the hard work and expertise of the Tioga County Department of Economic Development and Planning, and the Village of Nichols will reap the benefits of an outstanding opportunity that will expand affordable housing, provide job opportunities and continue to revitalize our downtown community."

Tioga County Open Door Mission and Red Door to hold food distribution

The Tioga County Open Door Mission and The Red Door will be providing free food to those in need beginning Friday, Feb. 8. The food distribution is open to all people in need and will take place at The Red Door located at 359 Broad St., Waverly, N.Y. The distribution will take place from 1 to 3 p.m. every other Friday.

Participants are asked to bring their own boxes and bags.
