Leslie A. Purser, daughter of Marilyn R. Miller of York Avenue, Towanda, is slated to receive a second star after serving 31 years in uniform. She currently serves in the Pentagon, as Director of Intelligence, Plans and Policy, for the Department of the Army.

The promotion ceremony will take place at 4 p.m. on Saturday, March 31, at the Saint Peter and Paul Cemetery located on James Street, Towanda. Lieutenant Gen. Jack C. Stultz, Army Reserve chief and commander of the Army Reserve Command, will preside.

Purser is a 1975 Towanda High School graduate and a 1980 graduate of Indiana University of Pennsylvania. In 2004, she earned a master's degree in strategic studies from the Army War College, Carlisle, Pa. She is also a graduate of the Military Intelligence Officer Basic and Advanced Courses, and the U.S. Army Command and General Staff School.

During her career, Purser has served in a multitude of capacities, but most frequently she served as a commander, taking command six times for units varying from military intelligence to combat support. She has also functioned as a training officer, executive officer, analyst, special security officer, adjutant, liaison officer to a foreign army, and a deputy joint training exercise coordinator. She has served at Fort Bragg, N.C., Fort Riley, Kan., Fort Leavenworth, Kan., Fort Lewis, Wash., MacDill Air Force Base, Fla., Louisville, Ky., Brunnsum, The Netherlands, Suffolk, Va., Richmond, Va., Charlottesville, Va., Fort Belvior, Va., Baghdad, Iraq, and at the Pentagon.

Purser's awards include two awards of the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star Medal, the Joint Meritorious Service Medal, four awards of the Meritorious Service Medal, the Iraqi Campaign Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, and the Military Intelligence Corps Knowlton Award.

She is married to Joe Purser and they have two children, Jennifer and Justin. Both of their children are Army officers - Jennifer is a captain stationed at Fort Huachuca, Ariz., and Justin is a first lieutenant stationed at Fort Campbell, Ky.

Lieutenant General Jack C Stultz, Chief, Army Reserve and Commander United States Army Reserve Command, will conduct a promotion ceremony in honor of Brigadier General Leslie (Miller) Purser at 4 p.m. on Saturday, March 31, at the SS Peter and Paul Cemetery on James Street in Towanda.
