Two killed in North Towanda accident: Accident claims the lives of Dushore, upstate New York men
NORTH TOWANDA TOWNSHIP - A Dushore man and an upstate New York man were killed Tuesday when their SUVs were involved in a head-on collision on U.S. Route 220 in North Towanda Township, authorities said.
The accident occurred at 10:21 a.m., when Scott Halbfoerster of Dushore was driving a Saturn SUV south on Route 220 and John Ambrosone of Hammondsport, N.Y., was driving a Subaru SUV north on Route 220, police said.
Based on a preliminary investigation, the accident occurred when Halbfoerster tried to pass a vehicle in front of him, state police said.
Halbfoerster's SUV crossed the double yellow lines into the northbound lane and struck Ambrosone's SUV head on, police said.
Halbfoerster, 44, and Ambrosone, 65, were pronounced dead at the scene, Bradford County Coroner Tom Carman said.
A 12-year-old girl, who was a passenger in Halbfoerster's vehicle, was transported by emergency medical helicopter to Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, police said.
State police said Tuesday night that they did not know the extent of the girl's injuries.
A female minor with the last name of Halbfoerster, who was brought to Geisinger Medical Center on Tuesday, was listed in critical condition there.
Both vehicles sustained major damage, the coroner said.
The accident occurred on the bridge which carries Route 220 over U.S. Route 6, police said.
The helicopter landed near the accident scene on a blocked-off section of Route 220.
Route 220 was completely shut down for several hours at the accident scene.
Traffic detours were short, as they consisted of the on- and off-ramps at the Route 6/220 interchange.
