ULSTER - The Ulster Township Supervisors voted to advertise the 2010 proposed budget, which contains no tax increase, at their meeting Monday.
The tax rate in the proposed budget is 7.74 mils, which breaks down into: real estate: 5.67 mils; fire: 1.33 mils; recreation: 0.37 mils; and Mather Memorial Library: .37 mils.
The total budget stands at $290,186, according to the proposed budget. The amount of state funds that the township expected to receive was cut by the state for the second year in a row, Supervisor Lewis Prough said, from around $62,000 in 2009 to around $59,000 in 2010.
Supervisor Boyd Rowe said the budget was "pretty realistic," and did include around $5,000 for a permanent speed sign for the township. The township currently has a portable speed sign, and Prough said it "really gets people's attention." The township will look into purchasing a permanent sign for along U.S. Route 220 in the coming year, and will still have the portable sign for elsewhere in the township, Rowe said. The township may purchase still more speed signs in the future, he said.
The speed signs are important for the township as Route 220 is a major thoroughfare, Prough said, especially with the increase in truck traffic from gas exploration in the Marcellus Shale.
