Red Cross youth poster contest planned
The "Youth: one you, one world, one Red Cross" poster contest is now being held in conjunction with Martin Luther King Jr. Day and supported by the National American Red Cross, according to a press release from the Red Cross.
The release continues:
The Sullivan Trail Chapter of the Red Cross is now accepting entries from all middle school students, grades 5-8 in the following districts: Elmira, Elmira Heights, Horseheads, Waverly, Watkins Glen, Odessa-Montour, Athens and Sayre.
The first place winner will receive a $100 U.S. savings bond, the second place winner will receive a $50 U.S. savings bond and the third place winner will received a Red Cross gift bag. Winners will also be invited to a special reception from 10-11 a.m. on Jan. 18 at the chapter's main office. Winners must be present to accept their award.
Posters will be on display at the Sullivan Trail Chapter's main office at 911 Stowell St. in Elmira and on its Web site.

Red Cross to hold winter lifeguard class
The American Red Cross will hold winter lifeguard classes from 12:30-3 p.m. on Jan. 24 and 31; Feb. 7, 21, and 28; and March 7 and 14 at the Elmira Free Academy High School, according to a press release from the Red Cross.

Participants must attend all dates, and there will be one Saturday class in January or February for CPR/FA.
The pool lifeguarding class has a cost of $150, which includes book and mask. Prerequisites include a 300 yard swim and brick retrieval to be completed the first day of class. A waterfront lifeguarding class is also offered, which costs an extra $50. Waterfront lifeguarding certifies participants to work at both pools and waterfront facilities (such as lakes). Prerequisites for the waterfront component include a 550 yard swim, brick retrieval and underwater ring retrieval to be completed the first day of class.
All participants for lifeguarding and waterfront lifeguarding must be 15 years old by the last date of the class. For more information, or to register, call (607) 734-3317.
Ridgebury Township supervisors reorganize
At their recent reorganization meeting, James Allen was voted as the chairman of the board of supervisors, replacing previous chairman Lawrence Ostrander, who remains on the board, according to the township secretary.
Tim Watkins, who was elected to the board in November, was voted vice chairman, the secretary said.
