Vineski gets mayor nod

Republican John G. Vineski said he was "letting it soak in" Tuesday night after he learned that unofficial election results showed him elected the next mayor of Canton.
He and Democrat Janette Walters were vying for the Canton Borough mayor seat.
"I'm glad that I was given the chance to serve Canton Borough as mayor for four years, and I'm going to do my best to make Canton a better place to live," he said.
The unofficial election results showed Vineski with 151 votes, or 64.26 percent of the vote, and Walters with 82 votes, or 34.89 percent of the vote.
Vineski said bringing jobs to the borough is number one.
He was campaigning outside the borough's lone polling place Tuesday, talking to voters.
Vineski noted the jobs lost when Parker Hannifin Corporation, located just outside the borough, closed. Earlier this year, the company officially informed the state that its Canton facility was closing beginning Sept. 18.
Vineski, who was mayor of Troy from 1986 to 1990, said he would like to get something in that facility to bring jobs back.
Better community services are another priority for Vineski. He said he wants to improve services to residents.
Walters wasn't available for comment Tuesday.
Two write in votes were tallied.
