TROY - And they walked.

Whether taking advantage of the warm weather or seeking to raise money for a good cause, people in western Bradford County are ambling about this week.

At 1:45 p.m. Monday, the digital temperature reading at the First Citizens Bank in downtown Troy was 52 degrees - not exactly what you'd expect on a winter day in northeastern Pennsylvania.

And there were several people strolling around taking advantage of the warming trend. Downtown, a jogger in shorts ran by on Canton Street while on Fenner Street, Kristen Merritt of Corning, N.Y., who works as a speech therapist at Troy Community Hospital, was taking advantage of her break by walking her golden retriever, Buckley.

She was exulting in both the mild weather and the Giants' win in the Super Bowl.

"I have no jacket," she said, pointing to her Giants sweatshirt with glee.

"I love it," she said of the warm weather. "It motivates me."

"All day, I haven't seen a cloud in the sky. I got to use the sunroof for the first time in my new car."

Ironically, the only place where it looked like February was indoors in the lobby of the Troy Area School District Administration Building.

Snow day posters from area television stations on display showed winter scenes, one with an illustration of a school bus covered in snow. Meanwhile, a plush snowman sat in the receptionist's window.

But there have been no snow days for Troy.

Over in Canton, there's another reason for getting active - helping the local American Heart Association.

Now through Saturday, Feb. 11, people can stop in any time from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Canton Fitness Center at 38 E. Main St. in Canton to take part in the Healthy Heart 5K, which takes place indoors on a treadmill.

"February is American Heart Month, and we thought this would be a cool way to have a little competitive benefit within the gym," said fitness center business manager Laura Brennan in a previous interview.

On Monday, Brennan said some people have been practicing for the 5K.

"It seems like there's definitely a competitive streak in people mainly just to see if they can do it," she said.

People pay a $5 registration fee to take part, and proceeds will be donated to the local branch of the American Heart Association.

The competition is open to both fitness center members and non-members.

Brennan said participants can just show up when it's convenient for them.

They can walk or run or do a combination of both for 3.1 miles on a treadmill at the gym. Their time will be documented by the fitness center when they are finished.

"We encourage everyone to participate, both our members and non-members, in an effort to come together and help us raise money," Brennan said.

So what are you waiting for?

Get out there and get active.
