Waverly Community Chest starts 2010 fund-raising drive

WAVERLY, N.Y. - Volunteers from the Waverly Community Chest sat in the Waverly Presbyterian Church on Tuesday stuffing envelopes with letters urging businesses, organizations and families to donate to their 2010 fund drive.

The Waverly Community Chest, a 60-year-old organization run by volunteers, supports different agencies that help the Waverly community, said Waverly Community Chest President Dale Barber.

Each year, the community chest holds a meeting where agencies that hope to receive funds make a presentation about their organization, Barber said. The community chest decides which agencies meet the guidelines, and usually looks toward how many people in Waverly are affected by the agency, he said.

For the 2010 fund drive, the Waverly Community Chest is hoping to raise $45,000 for 17 agencies that support people and families in the community, Barber said.

The 17 agencies receiving funding from the Waverly Community Chest this year are: A New Hope Center; Aktion KWEST; The American Red Cross; Big Brothers, Big Sisters of Bradford County; Boy Scouts of America; Girl Scouts of America; Camp Ahwaga; The Family Resource Center; Mothers and Babies Prenatal Network; Penn-York Valley Habitat for Humanity Inc.; Phoenix Kids Café and Youth Center; The Salvation Army; The Bridge of the Penn-York Valley Churches; Tioga Outreach of Catholic Charities; the Waverly Recreation Commission; and Waverly Chow for Children.

Each agency receives a different monetary allocation from the community chest, ranging from $500 -- which is what the community chest itself receives - to $4,500.

Typically, Barber said three-fourths of the goal is raised through the fund drive, and the rest is raised through a banquet and raffle held in December. Last year the community chest met its goal, and this year they're setting the bar higher for the amount to raise, Barber said.

"We've been very fortunate," he said. "Even though these are tough times, people are realizing that there are others who need assistance."

Anyone who wishes to donate to the Waverly Community Chest can send donations to 429 Fulton St. Waverly, NY 14892, and the community chest is also always looking for Waverly residents who would like to volunteer, Barber said.
