Canton Area School District congratulated
During the last Canton Area School Board meeting, district superintendent Matt Gordon announced that the district received letters from the Deputy Secretary of Education that offer congratulations to the elementary school and high school for achieving Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) in 2011. In the past, the schools had been on "warning" status. However, they are making AYP now.
Sylvania to hold trick-or-treat
Sylvania Borough will hold trick-or-treat from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 31, according to the borough office.
Residents wanting to take part in trick-or-treat are asked to turn their porch lights on. Also, trick-or-treaters are asked to be safety-conscious when walking in the borough.
Workshop scheduled in Canton
Parents are invited to a "Math Parent Workshop" sponsored by Title 1 Staff at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 26 in the Canton Elementary School, according to a news release.
The news release continues:
This workshop will provide information about the Everyday Math curriculum and give you tips and tricks to help your child at home with math. Pre-registration is required. Please return the registration form sent home with your child or contact the elementary school to register at (570) 673-5196.
Canton hires police
During its last meeting, Canton Borough Council hired two part-time police officers, pending completion of paperwork. They are Steve Vanderpool from Rome and Thomas Mumford from Forksville.
Ghost tour details announced
At 7 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 22, the Friends of the Canton Green Free Library will sponsor a Ghost Tour and Program at the Canton Green Free Library, 38 N. Center St., Canton, according to a news release.
The news release continues:
Ashley Riggs of Canton, will take participants on a brief walking tour around Canton where she will share stories of paranormal sightings and other experiences in the borough and beyond. The program will also include a discussion that will take place in the Library. Everyone is welcome to attend. Please bring a flash light (for safety walking on the sidewalk). If there is inclement weather, the whole program will take place in the library. There will be refreshments served.
