Support the Giving Tree by 'sponsoring a family'

The Canton Area Chamber of Commerce's "Giving Tree" program aims to provide a joyous Christmas to children who might not otherwise be able to celebrate the season. That mission has not changed, even with the recent partnership with Canton Area School District (CASD).

According to a news release:

The committee understands that it has become a family affair to purchase gifts during your holiday shopping especially for the Giving Tree. And in an effort to continue that tradition, the chamber is asking you to consider "sponsoring a family" instead of making a cash donation.

We are asking families, businesses or clubs to consider sponsoring a family for Christmas. The Giving Tree committee will coordinate, as they have in the past, working closely with the school district. Once the family registers, you will be provided with a "wish list," along with the gender and ages of the children. The sponsoring family will then do all the shopping, wrapping and tagging of the gifts they have purchased.

However, if you are not interested in sponsoring a family, we still need your help. This year, the CASD faculty will do the shopping for the Giving Tree and the National Honor Society is wrapping the gifts. The committee is asking that monetary donations are given, instead of the unwrapped items.

Donations will be accepted at several locations in the area or they may be mailed directly to the chamber. The Giving Tree committee has a goal of $4,000 to assist the local families in need, which is consistent with past years.

Maybe you know of a family that is struggling due to the loss of a job, medical reasons or another hardship. Asking for help during these trying times is not easy. Let the Giving Tree help. Information on family requests is not shared with the public and privacy is a priority to the Giving Tree committee.

Applications are now available online at www.cantonareachamberofcommerce.com or by calling the chamber at (570) 364-2600. The school nurses are also able to assist with the applications. Gifts are provided only to children in the Canton Area School District, so your donation stays local.
