Canton schedules snow day make-up

The snow day that occurred in the Canton Area School District on Dec. 9 will be made up on Wednesday, Dec. 23, according to the district's Web site.

There will be a full-day session on Tuesday, Dec. 22, and a half-day on Wednesday, Dec. 23, the Web site notes.

'Study Island' comes to Canton

The Canton Area School Board recently agreed to purchase the "Study Island" program for a five-year contract for $50,240 with Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) funds.

The board approved the purchase at its last meeting.

According to a fact sheet, Study Island is an online Web-based program that provides students the opportunity to work on educational content at both their instructional and grade level. They can access Study Island at school, at home, or any place that has computer accessibility. The research-based program was built to directly align with the Pennsylvania State Teaching Anchors and Benchmarks, and the school district will use the program to supplement current curriculum in core subject areas. It will be used as a remediation tool for students who fail on the Pennsylvania State Assessments. In addition, the district will implement the program as an incentive for Gifted Support Services as possible online coursework.

The description notes that the program's question database, which has more than 10,000 questions, provides students with a wide array of learning opportunities, and, once a student has achieved proficiency for a specific content standard, they are then able to play educational games that reinforce the assessed skills in each of the lesson areas.

All students in K-12 will have access to the program. It initially was set up for special education students; however, since the district belongs to BLaST it will be accessible to the entire district for the same cost, it was noted at the meeting. The contract is effective Jan. 1.
