National School Breakfast Week celebrated in Troy

The Troy Area School District celebrated National School Breakfast Week March 8-12 with free breakfast on one day for all district students.

The free breakfast increased participation by 43.5 percent in the elementary and middle schools, said food service director Bonnie Bixby.

Street foreman named in Canton

George Jennings was recently hired as street foreman by Canton Borough Council, according to Amy Seeley, Canton Borough administrator.

She said the vote was unanimous. He replaces the former street foreman, Lewis Howell, who retired after 50 years working for the street department.

Eric Anderson, chairman of the street committee, said Jennings has worked in the street department as a laborer for nearly 10 years, and "we just felt he certainly deserved the chance at being the foreman. He's proven himself at this point."

Regarding Howell's longtime service, he said, "that certainly is an oddity at this point. The borough has been graced for someone to stay that long, for having someone reliable, stable and trustworthy as he has been for 50 years." Anderson said Howell was the foreman close to 30 years.

Landscaping improvements planned in Troy

In the Troy School Board newsletter, school board president Keith Morgan noted the buildings and grounds committee is planning and implementing improvements to landscaping, signage and lighting in the district.

"These ongoing improvements will spruce up our buildings and make them more welcoming and inviting," he said. "Thanks to countless community members and volunteers who contribute in many ways to make our community and school district a great place to live and work."
