'March for Babies' to be held in Troy
The Bradford/Sullivan/Tioga March of Dimes' "March for Babies" will be held Sunday, May 9, at Alparon Community Park in Troy with registration at 8 a.m. and "step-off" at 9 a.m., according to a flier. It's held rain or shine.
Teams can sign up and raise money online, the flier notes. The Web site address is marchforbabies.org and the phone number is (800) 525-9255. The money raised in "March for Babies" pays for research and programs to help babies begin healthy lives, the flier notes.
Special exception OK'd in Canton
The Canton Borough Zoning Board recently approved a special exception for a Reiki business for Tina Tillotson in her home at 63 W. South Ave., Canton, according to Canton Borough Administrator Amy Seeley.
According to a flier for the business, Reiki is a technique for relaxation and stress reduction that is administered by a certified Reiki practitioner by applying hand placements on and over the body. It's a holistic, natural relaxation technique that increases a person's ability to deal with stressful situations both physically and emotionally, the description notes.
Canton approves personnel matters
During its last meeting, the Canton Area School Board accepted a retirement letter from Deborah Lutz, MIS director, effective March 19, with 11 ½ years of service to the district.
The board also accepted a letter of resignation from Larry Reed, custodian, effective February 26, with 3 ½ years of service to the district, and tabled filling the vacancy.
In addition, the board approved Teresa Allen as Senior Class co-advisor, effective immediately, for the remainder of the 2009/2010 school year, with a stipend of $164.50. The board approved the following additions to the substitute list pending completion of paperwork: Angela Thomas, Early Childhood Pre-K-3 teacher; Bryan Hoover, Music K-12 teacher; Brittany Zelewicz, Music K-12.
Strong women program scheduled in Canton
The "Strong Women" program begins April 7 in Canton, according to a news release.
Classes will be held in the Canton Area High School auditorium lobby. The introductory meeting will be on Wednesday, April 7. Exercise classes will take place on Mondays and Wednesdays, April 14 through June 9. The class runs from 4 p.m. to 5:15 p.m.

Offered by Penn State Cooperative Extension, it is designed for women over the age of 40. Participants learn how to do strength training exercises correctly and safely.
Strength training helps improve bone and muscle strength and balance. It benefits overall physical and mental health and improves energy level. Many women with arthritis find their joint pain reduced by strength training. Diabetics have seen improvements in their blood sugar control.
The program includes an introductory meeting and 16 exercise sessions. Each exercise session include a warm-up, 8-10 exercises, and cool down. There is no age limit or level of fitness required. Past participants have ranged in age from 41 to 87. You exercise at your own pace led by a certified instructor.
The cost for the Strong Women program is $80. Small hand weights and ankle weights are also needed. Information about types of weights needed and where to find them will be provided at the introductory meeting.

Scholarships are offered for the class fee and weights. They are provided through a grant from the Pa. Dept. of Health. The Area Agency on Aging is also offering to pay $40 of the class fee for participants age 60 and older through the Prime Time Health Program.
