Trout program back in Canton

Trout In the Classroom has returned to Canton High School with a new twist, Canton teacher Tom Hojnowski reported.

This time, he said, the experience is double the opportunity as a result of a grant from the Bradford County Conservation District. This year, the students are operating two tanks instead of one. This comes as a result of an $889.57 grant from the Pennsylvania Association of Conservation Districts through the Meaningful Watershed Environmental Education Grant Program, which is funded by the federal National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) B-WET Program. This funding was secured with the assistance of Rich Gulyas of the Bradford County Conservation District. "It is our hope to perhaps see if differing some minor environmental conditions offers similar or different levels of success," he said in a news release. "It will be interesting to see if the fish overall become larger prior to release as a result of more tank volume per fish." Senior Brady Seeley will once again head up the activities and monitoring of the Trout in the Classroom experience. He will be assisted by the Agriculture and Honors Earth Science 2 classes throughout the year. Last April, the students successfully released approximately 150 brook trout to a local stream.

PennDOT to post Austinville Road

PennDOT's Bradford County sign crew will post Austinville Road in western Bradford County with a permanent, year-round, weight restriction, according to a news release.

The release continues:

A total of 6.2 miles of the road will be posted, from the intersection with Route 14 in Columbia Township to the Tioga County, Pa. line in Sullivan Township, Tioga County. The posting is being made on the basis of a traffic and engineering study indicating that this highway may be damaged by the use of vehicles that exceed the restriction. In Bradford County, Austinville Road is also known as State Route 4016; in Tioga County, it's also known as State Route 1010.

School buses and local-delivery trucks are exempted from the postings. The posting will take effect as soon as the required signing is erected. A PennDOT maintenance crew will begin placing the road posting signs on or about Jan. 12.

Wisel said it's an especially important time of the year to drive safe.
