Woods elected mayor of Nichols
Deputy Mayor Esther Woods will be dropping the "deputy" from her title soon as she takes the reigns as Village of Nichols mayor from Doug Horton.
Woods won, with 87 votes to 31, over Horton in the village election held Tuesday, according to Village Clerk John Kopacko. Ronald Chase and Lesley Pelotte were elected to the village board of trustees, with 91 and 81 votes, respectively, Kopacko said. David Hazard also ran for the office of trustee and received 46 votes, he said. In total, 119 voters turned out to the polls, Kopacko said.
"I'm glad it's over," Woods said. "I think the board will get along well and be civil and actually get some work accomplished in the village."
Woods said one of the biggest challenges currently facing the village is the river levee in the village and the Federal Emergency Management Administration and possible new flood maps in the village.
Woods will take office in April, she said.
Horton said of Woods, Pelotte and Chase: "I wish them all the best and the best for the village.
"I feel that the two years as mayor of the village wasn't in vain ... We have two people with very good credentials on the board," Horton said. Horton said the new members of the board could "even out the debate and the difference in issues" that will face the board in the upcoming years.
Horton said he was proud to call Nichols his home, calling it "one of the nicest, best-looking villages to live in.
"I just think it's the greatest place in the world to live."
