A true milestone ...
Accreditation is credibility in the world of higher education - all the more so for the rare case of a new institution competing with established schools for students, faculty, money and the relative value of its degrees.
So the Commonwealth Medical College's recent announcement that it had achieved full accreditation from the Liaison Committee on Medical Education truly is a milestone for the institution and for the very concept of community-based medical education in Northeast Pennsylvania.
For the school, full accreditation is fundamental to, well, just about everything it does. The restoration of full accreditation validates a great deal of hard work by TCMC's administration, faculty, staff, students and supporters in the face of some daunting challenges.
The school was placed on probation relative to its accreditation in 2011 because of concerns about its financial stability. It received provisional accreditation a year later with a major financial commitment from Blue Cross of Northeastern Pennsylvania and was allowed to expand its incoming classes from 65 to 100 students.
Full accreditation now should further assist the institution in fundraising and, ideally, in seeking a university affiliation and corporate and health care industry partnerships.
Accreditation brings TCMC a crucial step closer to fulfilling its missions to help meet the region's and the nation's growing health care needs, and to help reinvigorate the economy of Northeast Pennsylvania.
