Poor decision

EDITOR: Do you have a clue as to who is going to benefit from the latest questionable decision by the county commissioners to pull the Penn State Extension Program, Master Gardener Program and 4-H offices, as well as the district justice, out of the school district owned building in Towanda Borough's First Ward? They also plan to move the Literacy Program to this new location and the Veteran's Representative. Has the school district asked them to move out?

I do not remember coverage of a county announcement of this possibility, so that program directors and taxpayers could consider all implications of the situation and question publicly what appears to inflict a very heavy blow to all of these programs and the County's Veterans' Representative office by moving them to an unsuitable area with very limited parking and questionable handicapped accessibility.

The commissioners recently purchased the old building on the corner of Main and State streets and feel that location is much better for all of these program? County employees are now working on the proposed location and I have seen no costs announced for the extensive renovations that must be carried out to accommodate approximately 10-12 employees, plus the public that uses their services.

If you are not familiar with the location and condition of that building, do a drive-by and see what you think and then drive down Main Street south to the former Towanda Township school building and see if you think that location is more feasible for such an endeavor.

They say that by selling the old Towanda Township school (now empty and owed by the county), the building will go back on the tax rolls. Well, only the county tax rolls, as well as Towanda Township if the buyer is not another tax exempt entity.

If this is true, what is the purpose behind all of this, and again, who is going to benefit from such maneuvers? As a Towanda Borough taxpayer, I am upset that county, once again, is taking another property from our tax base, which is overrun now with tax exempt entities on the books and is leaving the Towanda Area School District with another empty school building.

The legal notice that the county is holding an auction on Saturday, Feb. 13, for items including the entire kitchen contents of the former school building on Main Street south, and the notice that they are accepting bids for the purchase of the property at 10 a.m. on Feb. 25. If any taxpayers are as concerned about this as I am, contact all the county commissioners at once and demand a full explanation as to how they came to justify what appears to be a poor decision.

Jo Rockwell

Towanda

EDITOR'S NOTE: The Review first reported the County Commissioner's decision to vacate the First Ward building in a Page 1 story on Nov. 20.

In the last commissioners election all the county wanted was three commissioners who could work together and get along. Well we got'em and guess what? They're pretty good. Remember the board before this, the infighting, proposed library expansion and the huge tax increase? It was embarrassing to watch. We should probably have a little bit of faith, they have earned it.

I agree, with Joe D., our commissioners are trying their best, and we have seen much progress. I do not know all the particulars behind this decision, but given the 3 commissioners involved, it was carefully investigated, before the decision was made.

Joe D., Now I know why they drummed you out of the BCCC. Level headed, rational thought wouldn'y fly in that environment. Honest discourse??? Might as well be speaking Swahili.

Admittedly as a relative newcomer to Bradford County I am not all that privy to the buildings mentioned or the decisions made to relocate some of our public servants or offices. I do however support our BC Commissioners in their heartfelt endeavor to improve the infrastructure and cultural environment of not only Towanda but the county as a whole. I have found nothing short of honest discourse in dealing with the Bradford County Commissioners and the Borough of Towanda Commissioners in the past. In the hopes that nothing will happen to change my mind, I say this; I think they act for the good and well being of our citizens, I believe they do a good job.

I think the reasoning behind this is that they want as many county agencies and offices as possible located within walking distance of the court house. The township school building is in better shape but it's not in reasonable walking distance from downtown. I'm surprised one of the companies involved in the gas business has not snapped it up by now.

AND just how much do you think it would cost to renovate the old S.Towanda School bldg??? The physical location, of the new annex, to the court house is a good choice. There is as much parking available at the new location as currently available at the courthouse, perhaps more with spaces being picked up in the back of the building. Location. Location. Location.

Another whining Towanda resident. When will you people realize it is not all about Towanda. Other communities have tax exempt property and deal with it. County employees already contribute much in the way of taxes, pruchases, parking fees and fines, etc. to Towanda. Instead of appreciating what being the county seat means, you just whine more. It is not the fault of the rest of the county that your borough cannot seem to manage its finances and lives beyond its means. The commissoners did advertise this and if it benefits the rest of the taxpayers in the county then that is a good thing.

I agree 100% with Jo Rockwell. I doubt I'll call the commissioners to complain because either they're unavailable or they'll talk circles around me.
I can't believe the price they paid for a junk location and building (needs $100's of thousands in renovations).

Boldness must arise locally to save roads

It's nearly spring and the secondary roads here are in poor shape. Some of the main roads, as well. It's an annual occurrence. But, this year there is a dramatic difference. More roads are in far worse shape than perhaps ever before, in large part becau
