In support of HB 1978
EDITOR: Under current law, Pennsylvania-born adopted adults are denied access to their original birth information unless they have court approval and written permission from the parents who gave birth to them, unlike any other adult who does not need permission.
HB 1978, sponsored by Representative Benninghoff, would correct this inequality by allowing adult adoptees to have their original birth certificate. HB 1978 has been stalled in the House Health & Human Services Committee for almost a year. It deserves a public hearing so that members of the adoption community can voice their support for or concerns about the bill. Committee Chair Frank Louis Oliver should schedule a hearing as soon as the General Assembly returns from its summer break. Representative Matt Baker is Minority Chair of the House Health & Human Services Committee.
As adoptive parents of an adopted adult we know first hand how very important this basic right is for adult adoptees. We fully support HB 1978.
