Despicable

EDITOR: The long Sunday, Jan. 31 editorial "An honest good-bye to the sheriff" may have been honest in the sense of accurately reflecting editor Ron Hosie's opinions of the departing sheriff and other courthouse figures. However, to then call into question the chief deputy's character and qualifications on the basis of nothing but guilt by association is despicable. Some would perceive the called-for "full public vetting" as a witch-hunt and would long remember it as grounds for suspicion, even if nothing adverse was found. I strongly suspect that others would just see it as a convenient device to boost their paper's circulation. Mr. Hosie, you know better, or ought to.

I for one did not leave a post on the last article about sheriff Evans. (to much gossip)
Steve has treated both my husband & myself with much respect since we came to Bradford County back in 2000. He has been a good neighbor & a friend. His family has been very curteous & his son is a peach of a student.
WE wish him & his family the best & hope he continues to be a part of Bradford County as a private citizen. You will be missed!
Thank you in all you have done.

WOW how does this paper get away with this? outright attacks and mean-spirited tantrums. Hosie shame on you for that unprofessional column; even if it were all true; how far will you go? Will never buy your paper again!

When you live in a small, rural community, and Bradford County is a small, rural county, it is not unusual to know or know of, just about everyone. That is what makes every small detail so ripe for those who gather gossip.
Public officials make great targets.
I have heard it said, that in their hometowns, people are not remembered for the best or greatest thing they ever accomplished, but by the worst or lowest moments of their lives. Perhaps this why someone want to bring up a high school transcript in regards to Sheriff Evans. How many of us want to be remembered by our teenage years. Lordy, not me. Let go of the past people. If you had real facts, they would have been all over the headlines by now. Its just petty, foolish gossip at this point.
The Sheriff deserves to retire, and have peace and privacy.
Sadly, the gossips will find a new target. They always do.

Good for you Mr. DeBoer. That long rant was totally uncalled for. I find it interesting that there has never been any mention in this paper of the so called favoritism at sheriff sales of years past when certain relatives of a long ago sheriff aquired many, many properties in Bradford County.
Dan West 02/02/10 10:41
Anyone can attend and bid on these sales. It is that simple. Of course, you have to have the finances, or have approved financing, but otherwise these are open. Roger Brown does real estate for a living, but he is not the only one. There are several regulars at the sales, and I bet they all know the Sheriff, at least in this capacity. Don't believe the tales of conspiracy on the Sheriff Sales, it just has not happened. The ads are public, you can pick up a list at the court house, and the sales are public. Steve Evans sells the houses that are in default, he isn't robbing anyone of their home. This is just one aspect of the Sheriff's job. So, yes, anyone could outbid Roger Brown. I have no clue how Judge Smith is involved. I doubt anyone sees him at the sales, because after all he has a court to run.
The truth may be dull, but I still prefer it to innuendo, rumor, and outright gossip.
SueA 02/02/10 8:33
So many questions; I have a few for you. Couldn't anyone who wanted to do so have outbid Roger Brown at sheriff's sales? How was Judge Smith involved in any way in the sheriff's sales? You have, like many others, been misled by your local newspaper until you have come to believe that if the paper says something over and over again, it must be true.
think for yourself 02/02/10 6:06
Steve Evans has served proudly, and with honor. The majority of the voters re-elected him 5 times. That speaks volumes.
For those who did not want him to be sheriff, and claim to speak for the majority, I ask, did you vote? If indeed you believe you are part of a majority, how did he win. I think many, if not most, of those unhappy with Sheriff Evans, or other elected officials, have failed in their most important duty, Voting.
If you are not registered, or do not show up at the polls, than you should remain silent. You gave up your right to choose, and allowed others, like myself to speak for you. We said, yes, to Sheriff Evans 5 times. We are going to miss him. It will be very hard to find a successor as dedicated as Sheriff Evans. So, now we wish him the best of luck and success in this new job. Sheriff Evans, you are one of the truly good guys.
SueA 02/02/10 4:02
Dear Barry,
You must understand that Sheriff Evans pulled the Legal notices from this paper. I'm sure that did not make him any friends here.
Joe DuPont 02/02/10 9:36
No offense but Mr. DeBoer in a town that would be a little less rural I am sure that there would be a lot more questions about situations like this. I mean just how many sheriff sales went directly to the "friend" of the sheriff, meaning Roger Brown, and also in how many counties would it be considered bad business or questionable business practices to have the judge involved in situations like this? I am sorry, but if you ask me there is a lot of room for back room deals that many people would avoid just based on how the ethics would look alone. Perhaps nothing adverse was found, but how would one ever know?
So many questions 02/02/10 8:53
This is so true. The Daily Review has often used its position to support questionable members of the Court House Elite, and to discredit, or attempt to discredit, others. It deals in rumors, innuendo, and occasionally facts. I would think that before Deputy Walters was hired by the county, he was fully vetted. For this paper to leave the idea that he is somehow "tainted," is wrong. Just plain wrong. We already know what lies and gossip can do to reputations. Why set the stage. Give the man a chance.
Besides, this newspaper has never put forth one credible piece of evidence of wrong doing in the Sheriff's department.
The editorial was mean spirited. I am sure Steve Evans is looking forward to the day, no to far from now, when the Daily Reviews attacks are just bad memories.
Good luck, Sheriff Evans.
