No sense at all

EDITOR: This is a protest letter regarding the renumbering of buildings in Canton Borough.

I believe the renumbering method makes perfect sense for the township, as distance is important in order for emergency personnel to find a particular location.

However, for a town or city, this makes no sense at all!

My street consists of one block. The new numbers start at 19 in the north end and, according to the map on the back of the letter, ends with 87 (and the map only covers about half of this block). My new number is 42. The house to my right, with only a common driveway between us, is number 50. According to the letter, this is to allow for future building. I'd like to see someone squeeze three houses between us. The house on my left is 22. Perhaps if they tear down their shed and one wing of their house, one additional building could be squeezed between us.

Have you ever tried to find an address in a strange town or city? It's not really that difficult if you find the street, locate a building with a number on it, and then county by 2's to find the address you're looking for. With our new numbering, I doubt that anyone could find anyone unless they already knew where they lived.

Who exactly is responsible for this madness? Why was the project farmed out to a firm in Virginia? I'm sure we have more capable people in Pennsylvania. (Heck, I could have messed it up this badly). Were any police, fire or ambulance personnel consulted? I cannot believe that they agreed that this would be a good idea for a municipality! If a number is not posted on a building, should emergency personnel have to leap out of their vehicles and measure the distance from some obscure location?

I have e-mailed friends in California, Tennessee, Arizona, Texas, New York, etc. and nowhere, I repeat nowhere else in this country have I found that they have this type of system for a municipality.

We are upset and rightly so. Hopefully, saner minds will prevail and this can be reversed.

I have to agree with Sue. I hope this can be corrected before some emergency responder ends up wasting precious time due to a illogically numbered house.

City style addressing is the best, and most convenient, for everyone. I also wonder why this seems so complicated.
