TIOGA CENTRAL, N.Y. - The Tigers fell in a tough game against TAE 3-1 Thursday.
Edison took the first game 25-20 while Tioga won the second 25-22. TAE won the next two games 25-21 and 25-23.
"What a great match to coach tonight," Tioga coach Des Ford said, "The two teams played an outstanding match. Both teams came out to win the match and in the end, only one can win."
Jess Ramsey had 10 points, three kills, five digs and 29 assists for Tioga, Audrey Talcott had five points and 10 kills, Kay Pfleghardt had seven points, 11 kills and 19 digs, Cierra House had two points, six kills and three digs and Natalie Burns had six kills and 10 digs.

The Mansfield University field hockey team will open its 2010 season with a three-game road trip to New England starting at third-ranked UMASS-Lowell today, followed by games against St. Michaels and Southern Connecticut at the Southern Connecticut Tournament Saturday and Sunday.
Head coach Diane Monkiewicz enters her 13th season at the helm of the Mountaineer program with eight returning starters from last year's team and a host of talented newcomers. Monkiewicz is confident the team will be more balanced from last season and be in the hunt for a playoff spot in the tough Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West Division.

Waverly lost 4-0 to Newark Valley in girls' soccer action at the Greene Invitational Thursday.
Angella Halliday had all four NV goals, all coming in the first half. Halliday scored 6:36 at in off a Mikayla Rypkema assist, then followed that up with a goal at the 27:12 mark off a Lindsey Bakal assist.
Halliday's next two goals came at 29:03 and 31:47; both of them were unassisted.
"With two games in two days I think we were a bit worn down," Waverly coach Brian Myers said. "Newark Valley is a very good team with some very good players."

Raul Reyes enjoyed a 2-for-4 night with a double and a homer, but Binghamton fell 5-3 to Portland in a back-and-forth affair Thursday night at Hadlock Field to drop the four-game set 3-1. The game wrapped up the B-Mets 71-game road slate for 2010.
Binghamton (65-72) was first to tally with a run in the second inning. Brahiam Maldonado hit a seeing-eye single to left with one out off starter Blake Maxwell. Reyes pushed the runner up to third with a ground-rule double to right-center. Luke Montz brought Maldonado home to score on a soft groundout to third.

Williamsport fell behind by three early runs, but Ryne White's grand slam capped off an eight-run second inning to power the Cutters to a 9-5 victory over the Mahoning Valley Scrappers Thursday night at Historic Bowman Field.
Jordan Cooper retired four of the first five batters he faced before Kelly Dugan doubled to set in a motion a string of eight straight Cutters reaching base and scoring. Williamsport got RBI hits in the inning from Jeff Cusick, Edgar Duran, and Matt McConnell, before White's slam made the score 8-3.

Q: Greg, I really love your old NASCAR and nostalgia columns and was wondering if Ned Jarrett could have been a three-time champ had he kept racing. Didn't he retire at a young age? Mel, North Carolina.
A: Mel, by today's standards, he retired at a very early age. I've had the opportunity to both work with Ned and interview him several times over the years, and I'll admit had Ned kept racing, there is little doubt he would have won more championships.
