CORNELL, N.Y. - Runners from Waverly and Notre Dame ran at the N.Y. state indoor track and field championships on Saturday.

Notre Dame's team of Mary Pelkowski, of Sayre, Victoria and Brittany Schutrum and Deborah Diarrah finished ninth in the 4x200 relay with a time of 1:48.95, missing the final by just .43.

Waverly's 4x400 relay of Liia Carpenter, Lea McMahon, Kaylee Uhl and Sam Goble finished 10th in 4:11.01, while Uhl was 27th in the 600 in 1:45.74 and Goble was 30th in 1:50.13.

"It's all about opportunities and we just couldn't take advantage of them," Waverly coach Scott Baird said. "It's disappointing because they felt they had a pretty good shot. By no means though was it by lack of effort. I guess it just wasn't meant to be.

"But, I told them, if we don't get there, we don't have that opportunity."

On the boys side Carl Shen of Notre Dame was 20th in the long jump at 19-feet, 10 1/4-inches.
