Athens JH soccer picks up two wins
Athens Junior Wildcats soccer team stays perfect on the season with recent wins over Wellsboro and Williamson.
In Wellsboro - right wing striker Emily Lunger's "hat trick" provided all the scoring punch that the junior cats needed to top Wellsboro 3-0. Strikers Ariana Gambrell and Rachel Hutchison were each credited with an assist on Lunger's last two goals.
Athens held a huge shots on goal margin at 14-1. Cat Keeper Braden Priester registered two saves.
In Williamson - center midfielder Ethan Lane's "hat trick" and center striker Bradley Cardona's "double shot" lead an all Athens outing as the junior wildcats blanked Williamson 7-0. Striker Brandon Hunsinger got the Cats on the board less than 10 minutes into the game by blasting a direct kick past the Warrior keeper. From there it was nearly all Lane and Cardona. Lane added is first goal at the 20:00 minute mark with a long shot from deep outside the 18 to give the Cats a 2-0 halftime lead. Cardona recorded his first tally of the game less than 8 minutes into the second half giving Athens a 3-0 lead. Striker Emily Lunger momentarily broke up the Lane/Cardona tag-team less than 2 minutes later by punching in an unassisted goal to take the Cats up 4-0. Then Lane and Cardona traded goals - Lane first - then Cardona to take the Cats up 6-0. Lane capped the scoring column with a solo blast in the final minute to give Athens the final margin of 7-0.
Athens held a huge shots on goal margin at 18-3. Cat keeper Kara Chapman registered three saves.
Athens won the "B" game 4-0 behind two goals from center striker Rachel Hutchison and two goals from left wing striker Emma Adams.
Athens Head Coach Shawn Priester said "Our offense is really starting to click with several players finding the net this season. But I really love the defensive effort that we've put behind them. We've only given up two goals in the last five games."
Athens is home on Wednesday vs. cross-town rival Sayre for an early 3:30 p.m. game. Athens plays their home games on the junior high soccer field behind Lynch Elementary.
