ATHENS - Athens fell 3-0 to Montoursville in girls' soccer action Saturday but Wildcats coach Duane Hafer wasn't upset with the result.

"It was a great tune up to get ready for Districts," Hafer remarked. "We realized what we have to face down there."

For much of the first half the game was a scoreless tie until a six minute stretch late.

At 13:29 Warrior Makenzy Russell scored after Montoursville passed the ball side to side.

"It was a great play," Hafer said.

Then at 8:06 Montoursville's Alexis Weisser scored on a penalty kick.

"Both girls were fighting for the ball and she went down," Hafer explained.

Then less than a minute later Lexi Marchioni scored on a rolling shot to make it 3-0 Montoursville.

"It looked like it was going to miss the goal from the sideline," Hafer said.

Athens would keep the Warriors out of the net in the second half to make it a 3-0 final.

"They had a PK and a goal that was kind of funny," Hafer remarked. "Take away those two and it was a 1-0 game. It was pretty even and the stats show it."

Montoursville had an edge in shots 12-7 and corner kicks 5-3.

Wildcat goalie Morgan Westbrook made nine saves while Montoursville keeper Marlene Bassett had seven saves in the clean sheet.

The Warriors recently won their league title.

In the JV game Athens fell 2-0.

Hafer believes this was a good showing for his team and would like to get another crack at them in districts.

"I wouldn't mind if we had to play Montoursville again," he said. "It wouldn't bother me one bit. I was pleased with how both teams played against Montoursville, we played up against them."

Athens now waits to see who they will face in the opening round of district play.

Midd-West 2, Wyalusing 0

Late goals in the first and second half was the difference in this non-league girls' soccer game Saturday.

Midd-West out shot the Rams 13-2 and had a 2-0 corner kick advantage.

Wyalusing's keeper made 15 saves while Midd-West's goalie had two.

The Rams finish the season 8-9-1.
