B-Mets can't escape early hole in 7-3 loss
The Bowie Baysox scored three runs in the first inning for the second consecutive game and defeated the Binghamton Mets 7-3 Wednesday night at NYSEG Stadium. The B-Mets surrendered a dozen hits in their fourth straight loss at home.
Bowie wasted little time grabbing the lead against starter Gonzalez Germen. Antoan Richardson led off the first with a single, stole second and scored on a double by Josh Barfield, the first of three RBI's in the game for the left fielder. Two batters later, Manny Machado lifted his second home run of the series over the right field wall. The two-run shot was his sixth of the season.
After being kept in check by starter Tim Bascom for two innings, the B-Mets compiled a two-out rally to crack the scoreboard in the third. Juan Lagares started with a single, moved to second on a walk and came home on Jefry Marte's line drive single to left. Wilmer Flores cut the deficit to one by blasting a solo home run, his first as a B-Met, to right centerfield in the fourth inning.
With Binghamton nipping at their heels, the Bowie Baysox plated an insurance run on a sac fly by Barfield against Germen in the fifth, his final inning. The righty allowed four runs on six hits while striking out three. Jeff Stevens took over in the six and posted two perfect frames.
Flores' homer proved to be the final run allowed by Bascom. He completed his night with two scoreless innings, working around a pair of walks to post a shutout sixth. He surrendered two runs on six hits in six innings of work.
Trailing by two, the B-Mets threatened in the seventh against reliever Chris Petrini. Lagares walked and Reese Havens supplied a two-out single, but the rally was cut short when Jefry Marte bounced back to the mound to start an inning-ending double play.
After Bowie extended the lead with three runs against Erik Turgeon over the final two innings, Petrini closed things out. His only blemish was an RBI single by Juan Lagares in the ninth.
Bascom (4-5) snapped a six-game winless streak, earning his first victory since May 19. Germen (4-5) watched his three-game winning streak come to end with the loss. Petrini earned his first Double-A save.
