Black Knights down Warriors; Trojans, Tigers earn wins, too

TOWANDA - The Black Knights used a 26-9 first quarter then held the Warriors to 10 second-half points in their 79-32 girls' basketball win Thursday.
Kylee Sutton led Towanda with 20 points, nine boards and six steals while Alison Wickwire had a double-double of 17 points and 15 boards. Also for the Black Knights, Darien Lantz and Mariah Monahan both had 10 points with Monahan amassing nine assists and five steals while Lantz had five assists and five steals. Ashley Fleming chipped in with eight, Taylor Shay had seven, Marissa Garris had four and Michelle Aronson had three. Cassie Benjamin also chipped in with three assists and three steals.
Rebecca Machmer led Canton with 10 points while Randi Kutz had eight. Kaitlyn Meyer and Sara Hanft also had five each with Rachel Holmes and Jada Smith chipping in with two each.
The Black Knights won the junior varsity game 62-27. Alysha Grimes had 19 while Ashley Fleming scored 15 for Towanda. Canton's top scorers were Sara Hanft with nine and Chelsea Heatley with eight.
Troy 55, Wyalusing 42
The Trojans used a 20-8 first quarter to top Wyalusing in girls' basketball action Thursday.
After the first quarter, the Rams got back into the game, outscoring Troy 16-4 to tie it up at 24 at the half. The Trojans then outscored Wyalusing 31-18 in the second half to get the win.
"Overall, I'm proud of the way the girls played on the court," Troy coach Erik Marhefka said. "We capitalized on our steals. In the second half we shot well and played very good team defense."
Meghan Manning's double-double led Troy as she had 19 points and 12 boards to go with six steals. Also for the Trojans, Lauren Gustin had 11 points and three blocks, Amanda Goodwin had seven points, five assists, seven steals and three boards, Courtney Mattocks had eight points, Auburn Jones had three points, five assists and five boards, Briana Chamberlain had five and Kayla Shedden scored two.
Alexis Daly led Wyalusing with 14 points, while Gabby Edsell had 11 and Erica Crawford had 10. Erin Goodwin chipped in with five while Laci Holdren had two.
Marhefka believes his team is starting to gain steam as they enter the last part of the regular season.
"I feel we have what it takes to compete with anybody in the NTL," he said. "The girls are starting to believe that. Hopefully we get a few wins to carry us into districts."
Wyalusing won the junior varsity game 46-28. Ariel Kneller had 17 for the Rams while Vanessa Benson had 14 for Troy
Troy will face Coudersport with a 2 p.m. junior varsity start on Saturday.
Mansfield 53, Liberty 28
The Tigers jumped out to an 18-9 first quarter lead as they defeated the Mountaineers in girls' basketball action Thursday. They stretched that lead to 38-13 at the half.
Taryn Rumsey's double-double of 16 points and 10 boards, plus eight steals, led Mansfield while Tanya DeWalt had 26 points, nine boards, five blocks and four steals.
Also for the Tigers, Verena Reed had six points, Lauren Davenport had three and Laura Brennan scored two.
Brooks Scott-Knecht led the way for Liberty with 18 points.
"I was pleased with our intensity," Mansfield coach Jason Dominik said. "We were able to get our transition game going. I was pleased with the execution."
Mansfield won the junior varsity game.
The Tigers travel to North Penn with a 6 p.m. junior varsity start on Saturday.
Wellsboro 47, North Penn 33
The Green Hornets jumped out to a 15-9 first quarter lead, but North Penn stayed close as Wellsboro led 25-17 at the half. The Green Hornets used an 11-6 third quarter to get the necessary separation to earn the win.
Kelly Hebert led the way for Wellsboro with 12 points while Alex Marple chipped in with 11. Regan Rogers had eight, Makenzie Marple scored seven, Amy Driscoll had six, Brooke Snyder had two and Raina Rogers scored one.
Corrinne Warren and Jen Vlajic led the Panthers with six points each while Jess Bowne and Ashley Baker had five apiece. Mikayla Kshir had four while Stephanie Dawson, Chelsea Moran and Kelsey Fessler each had two. Kayla Parker chipped in with a foul shot.
Wellsboro won the junior varsity game 39-22.
The Green Hornets will be at Elkland Saturday.
