Bullpen backs B-Mets in 3-2 triumph over Harrisburg

Binghamton starter Robert Carson left due to injury in the fourth inning, but the bullpen pulled it together to lead the B-Mets past Harrisburg 3-2 Saturday night at NYSEG Stadium. Despite the loss, the Senators remain deadlocked with Bowie for the final playoff spot in the Western Division.

Harrisburg (75-65) struck for a run in the first inning off Carson. Steve Lombardozzi worked a leadoff walk and advanced to third on Josh Johnson's double. Jesus Valdez drove the runner home from third on a groundout to short, but that was all the Senators would manage as Johnson ran into a double play trying to take third on the groundout.

Binghamton (66-74) rallied to take the lead in the bottom of the frame. Brad Peacock walked a pair of hitters and was within an out of getting out trouble, but Brahiam Maldonado made the righty pay for his lack of command. Maldonado laced a triple over the head of rightfielder Michael Burgess clearing the bases to give the B-Mets a 2-1 lead.

Carson, who had faced one over the minimum through three innings, was knocked out of the game in the fourth. He hit Johnson with a pitch to start the inning. Valdez followed and lined one back up the middle that caught Carson in the left arm. He exited as result and gave way to Edgar Ramirez, who got out of the inning unscathed to keep the one-run lead intact.

Eric Campbell upped the Binghamton lead to two runs with his sixth home run of the season. The third baseman lined a slider from Peacock over the wall in left with two outs in the fourth.

Ramirez retired the first seven men he faced before allowing Johnson to reach with two outs in the sixth. Johnson dropped a bunt down in front of the mound that Ramirez fielded cleanly, but the hurler threw wild to first allowing Johnson to reach on the error. After walking Valdez, Chris Marrero grounded a single through the right side to plate Johnson, bringing the Senators with a run, 3-2.

Elvin Ramirez replaced Edgar Ramirez in the seventh and carried the game into the ninth with 2 1/3 innings of scoreless work. Roy Merritt was summoned to get the final two outs. Though the southpaw walked the first man he faced, Burgess, Merritt induced a game-ending double play to short from Edgardo Baez to notch his ninth save.

Edgar Ramirez earned his sixth win with 2 2/3 innings on one-run relief. Peacock took the loss after allowing three runs on three hits over 4 2/3 innings.

Binghamton looks to even the five-game set in the fourth game of the series Sunday at 6:35 p.m. RHP Ryan Tatusko (2-1, 1.82) starts for Harrisburg against a yet to be named starter for the B-Mets. The radio broadcast on Newsradio 1290 WNBF begins at 6:20 p.m. with the Horizons Federal Credit Union Pre-Game Show.
