Carlsen nets 1,000th point as Panthers hold off Tigers
LERAYSVILLE - Usually fans don't erupt with wall shattering cheers after a made free throw during the third quarter of a girls' basketball game.
But that's what the Northeast Bradford faithful did Tuesday night as Kelsey Carlsen made the second of two free throws to reach the 1,000 point plateau in her team's 51-41 win over Mansfield.
"It's really great," the senior remarked after the game. "I've had a lot of really good teammates over the years that have really helped me out and I'm so happy to get it."
Hearing the roar of the crowd was the icing on the cake for Carlsen.
"It's an awesome feeling," she said about getting it at home. "I actually didn't score very much the last few games and I felt it was meant to be at home."
Carlsen had an idea that she was coming up on the milestone.
"I knew approximately what I had," she explained. "I pretty much knew what I needed to do."
Carlsen was also doing her best to keep it out of her mind these past few games.
"I really hadn't thought about it too much," she remarked. "I just go out and try to help my team win."
Needing 11 points coming in, Carlsen had five in the first quarter and only two in the second. However, in the third she got to the free throw line on separate occasions, making all four free throws with final one her 1,000th point.
Carlsen didn't stop there, though, scoring two more in the quarter and four more in the fourth to lead Northeast with 17 points, six boards and three steals.
It was a close, physical game throughout.
A lay-up at the buzzer by Mansfield's Emily James knotted it at 11-all after one. In the second, all six Panthers that played scored to give them a 28-22 lead at the half.
Both teams had nine points each in the third quarter to keep it a six point lead heading into the final quarter.
The Tigers cut it to four at one point in the fourth but Northeast pulled away late for the 10 point win.
Haylie Phillips had eight points and seven boards for the Panthers while Alyssa Coon added eight points and seven boards.
Calla Martin had seven points, six steals and four assists, MaKaylah Holbert netted six points while Maddy Johnson added five.
Jackie Hillson had 19 points to lead Mansfield while Molly Wood added 11. Emily James netted nine points and Erin Dempsey rounded out the Mansfield scoring with two.
For the Panthers, this is their fourth win in a row as they make a push to qualify for districts.
"My biggest goal, even bigger than scoring 1,000 points, is to make districts," explained Carlsen. "It really is a big goal for us."
As for on Tuesday, Carlsen looked back and found her inspiration for basketball.
"I learned a lot from my sister (Kristin Carlsen)," the senior said. "She's a really good player."
