LIME RIDGE - It was another tough opener for the Redskins, who lost to CMVT 20-0 in high school football action Saturday.

The teams were tied halfway through the fourth quarter when CMVT went to a 3-back power-I formation that eventually wore Sayre down.

"It seemed for three and a half quarters we were stopping them," Sayre coach Larry Hanafin said, "That's a solid ball club, they beat Canton last year. You beat Canton, you're good."

Jay Hardenber ran for 105 yards on 36 carries with two touchdowns for the Rams, while Alex Long had 42 yards on 10 carries and Josh Gavin had 50 yards on five carries.

The Rams got the ball first and took the opening drive deep in Sayre territory 10-yard line. However, the Redskins stopped CMVT on fourth down and goal to force a turnover on downs.

Sayre's first possession was marked with runs of 10 yards by Alex Lyons and eight yards by Conor White, but a holding penalty stalled the Redskin offense and they were forced to punt.

CMVT took over on their own 24 yard line, but Sayre stopped them around mid-field and forced them to punt. The Redskins couldn't do anything on the ensuing drive, though, and were forced to punt.

On CMVT's next drive the first turnover of the game happened as Sayre's Nick Bostwick picked off a Josh Gavin pass to give the Redskins possession at midfield.

However, another holding penalty stalled the Redskin offense again and they were forced to punt. CMVT didn't fare any better, going 4-and-out on their ensuing drive.

Sayre took over on their own 36-yard line after the CMVT punt and started the drive with a 13-yard run by Joey Yanuzzi. However, the drive was again stalled as the Ram defense tightened and Sayre was forced to punt.

CMVt took over on their own 28, but didn't have enough to do anything before half as both teams went to the locker room scoreless.

The Redskins got possession to start the third quarter and were bolstered by a 9-yard run behind Jesse Dagutis, However, another holding penalty stalled the drive, followed by quarterback Tyler Williams throwing an interception to the Rams Tyler Solomon, giving CMVT the ball on the Sayre 45.

The Redskins would get the ball back, though, as two plays later Lyons would recover a fumble to give Sayre the ball back on their own 38.

On the next play the Redskins continued to gain momentum thanks to an 11-yard run by Brad Felt, followed by a seven yard run by Lyons. Behind runs of six and seven yards by Lyons Sayre drove to the CMVT 20 when Felt lost the ball.

It was picked up by CMVT and everything went down hill for the Redskins from there.

"We thought we were gaining the upper hand," Hanafin explained, "but once that happened. Alex Lyons, when he went out, they went where he was. That's why I put him there. He was making a lot of plays, doing very well. When he's in there it makes things go smoothly."

The Rams would go 84-yards on 18 plays, scoring the game's first touchdown with 8:01 left in the fourth quarter on a 1-yard run by Hardenber. The two-point conversion was no good but the Rams still led 6-0.

Sayre's next possession didn't go too well as they were forced to punt. The snap went over punter Michael Bostwick's head and he was taken down at his own 31, giving the ball back to CMVT.

The Rams would go four plays and to the endzone as Long punched one in from five yards out. After the extra point CMVT let 12-0 with 5:00 left in the game.

Sayre's offense took the field again, but they couldn't get any positive yardage and turned it over on downs at their own 30.

CMVT would only need three plays to score their third touchdown of the quarter, a 5-yard run by Hardenber with 3:08 left. After the extra point CMVT led 20-0.

Sayre made one final push, but fumbled on the Ram's 25 yard line, which CMVT recovered and ended the game.

Lyons led the Redskins on the ground, gaining 48 yards on seven rushes before leaving the game with a leg injury. Yanuzzi had 34 yards on 11 rushes, Felt had 15 yards on five rushes while Williams had one yard on 13 carries.

Throwing the ball Williams was 1-6 for four yards, hitting Yanuzzi for a 4-yard gain.

On the CMVT side Gavin went 2-4 for 25 yards, hitting Tyler Solomon for a 28-yard gain and Hardenber for a three yard loss.

Hanafin put the loss on his shoulders despite injuries to his team.

"I should have had the team prepared better," he said, "At the end, they were sending way more than we could block and I'm responsible for the blocking and it wasn't there."

The Redskins also caught the ire of the referees.

"We had two holding penalties in the first half," Hanafin said, "We're starting off first and thirty-something, first and 25, we had the one penalty where it happened from the point of the foul."

However, it just came down to the fact that CMVT took advantage of Sayre's miscues.

"We made mistakes and they made us pay for them," Hanafin said, "In the end, they were tougher and better coached."

Hanafin will also develop his team's mental ability this week along with the physical.

"Our mental toughness at the end, I was not pleased with how we handled things at the end," he said, "I don't think we fought we to the bitter end. I'm not saying everybody, but as a team, if you were sitting in the stands, we kind of succumbed at the end and I am not pleased with that."
