Collegiate round-up: Robinson stars for Misericordia

Former Tioga Central High School basketball standout Jesse Robinson had a big night to lead the Misericordia University women's basketball team to a 63-52 come-from-behind win over Lycoming, Tuesday.

A sophomore guard, Robinson kept MU close with a game-high 25 points and the Cougars overcame a 48-41 deficit with a 22-4 run to close the game.

After scoring 23 of her points over the first 34 minutes, Robinson's final bucket gave the Cougars a 50-48 lead with 2:13 to play.

She was eight of 13 from the floor, including two for two on three pointers, and added four assists and three steals as the Cougars improved to 2-2.

She leads the team in scoring with 16 ppg and is second with 5.8 rebounds per game. She also has a team-high 3.8 assists and 3.8 steals.

Athens' grad helps SUNY Cobleskill take third

The SUNY Cobleskill men's swimming & diving team posted a score of 286 points to place third in a field of three teams at a triangular meet hosted by the Fighting Tigers at the Bouck Natatorium on Thursday evening. Wells College won the event with a team mark of 375 points while SUNY Delhi took second with a score of 294 points on the night.

The Fighting Tigers opened the festivities in impressive fashion as the 200 Yard Freestyle Relay of freshman Josh Cotugno, Westfield, N.Y., Westfield High School, sophomore Matt Burud, Red Hook, N.Y., Red Hook High School, junior Sam Adamoschek, Canajoharie, N.Y., Canajoharie High School, and sophomore Travis Hall, Athens, Pa., Athens Area High School, captured the event by over 10 seconds in a time of 1:56.93.

Sophomore Matt Burud continued his strong campaign winning the 100 Yard Breaststroke in a time of 1:13.32 then took second place in the One Meter Dive with a score of 145.65 points. Freshman Josh Cotugno was also

major individual producer for the Orange & Black as the talented rookie captured the 100 Yard Backstroke in a time of 1:01.38 along with a fourth place finish in the One Meter Dive with a score of 101.45 points

The Fighting Tigers will next be in action on Saturday, Nov. 21 when they travel to Geneva, N.Y. to compete in the William Smith Invitational hosted by William Smith College beginning at 12 noon.

Garges runs well for MU

The Misericordia men's cross country team wrapped up a successful season with a 20th place finish at the NCAA Division III Mideast Regional Meet. The team also finished sixth at the MAC conference championship meet.

Senior Ryan Garges, a Northeast Bradford graduate, finished sixth at the NEPA Classic, with a 6k time of 21:01 and then finished 32nd at the Cougar Classic, in 29:10.

Garges ran 28:05 at Lehigh and finished 39th at the MAC Championships, with a time of 29:39. He ran a season-best 27:42 at NCAA Mideast Regionals, good for 129th place overall.

Former NTL players named captains

The Misericordia baseball team has announced their captains for the upcoming 2010 season. Seniors Jamie Philippi of Northeast Bradford and Nate Newman of Ulster will lead the Cougars as they look to build on their 22-18 record in 2009.

Philippi will be the number one pitcher and play second base when he doesn't pitch. He earned All-Conference accolades as a freshman. Philippi is a business major and plans to grauate in May.

Newman will play shortstop and hit third in the batting order. He led the team with 9 HR's and 47 RBI last year. He was an All-Conference and All-Region player in 2009. Newman is an education major and plans to graduate next fall.

The MU baseball team opens up the 2010 season on February 20 with a doubleheader at Shenandoah in Virginia.

Mountaineers offering baseball clinics

Looking for the perfect Christmas gift for your favorite baseball player?

Because of popular demand, the Mansfield University baseball program will host an expanded 18 sessions of its popular Christmas Baseball Clinics this year including a mini-camp option for those seeking a more intensified experience.

A long-time stocking stuffer tradition, the 18 sessions will be broken down into age groups of 7-12 and 13-18 and will be offered December 27-30. Registration for all clinics is Decker Gym. Indoor facilities include Decker Gym and the Kelchner fitness Center.

Under the direction of long-time Mountaineer Head Coach Harry Hillson, Assistant Baseball Coach Chris Francis, Assistant Baseball Coach Casey Baker ,Wellsboro High School Baseball Coach Matt Perry and the Mountaineer baseball team, the clinics have proven to be one of the most popular post-Christmas activities for area baseball players.

The MU baseball program has been one of the most successful in the nation in the last two decades and has earned a national reputation for hitting. Over the past 15 seasons, the Mountaineers have finished in the top 10 in hitting in NCAA Division II six times, including winning the national batting title in 1994 with a .371 team batting average. In 2005, the Mountaineers Eric Baker led the nation in hitting with a .500 batting average. The Mountaineers led the PSAC in hitting with a .336 batting average and homeruns with 41 in 2008. The Mountaineers are regarded as the top hitting team in the PSAC for the decade of the new millennium.

The Hitting Clinic provides participants with one-on-one instruction, drill work, and live hitting in the areas only indoor batting cages along with drill work and videotape analysis.

The Pitching Clinic is designed to work on breaking down the mechanics of pitching, along with instruction, drill work, live mound work, videotape and radar gun analysis.

The Mini-Camp provides a full day of hitting, defense, specific position development, base running, strength and agility training as well as the mental aspects of the game.

The Elite Defensive Skills featuring infield, outfield, or catching instruction. Each player will receive intensified instruction in basic and advanced concepts relating to their position.
