Crusaders give Waverly first IAC loss
ELMIRA, N.Y. - The Crusaders defended their home turf Friday.
Waverly came in undefeated in the IAC and looking to clinch their second straight Large School Division I title but Notre Dame got in the way. While the two team's defenses keyed on the star players of each team it was the Crusader's other players that stepped up in a 50-38 win.
"Waverly did a great job on (Shane Manning) defensively as I thought we did on Ryan Hewitt," Notre Dame coach Bill Hopkins remarked. "The stars kind of took a back seat to the role players. I'm real proud as Darius Garvin, Bryan Brown and Tom Agan stepped up as Shane was being guarded and they made plays."
Brown and Agan had 11 points each to lead the
Crusaders while Garvin added eight. Notre Dame center Matt Davis had a double-double of 10 points and 10 boards.
Manning and Colin White had four points a piece while Derek Marshall added two. Manning also had five assists, two steals and two blocks.
Chris Raupers had 10 points and five boards for Waverly while Ryan Hewitt added 10. Nick Zwierlein chipped in with nine points, four steals and five assists.
Dylan Perry added three for the Wolverines while Ryan McFarland, Nick Jilson and Evan Van de Wall had two points each.
