Cutters win on Alonso's walk-off blast
Carlos Alonso belted a 1-0 fastball over the left-centerfield wall to lead off the bottom of the ninth, to propel the Williamsport Crosscutters to a 2-1 victory over the State College Spikes Saturday night at Historic Bowman Field, pulling the Cutters one game closer to reaching the New York-Penn League playoffs for the first time since 2005.
Newcomers Lendy Castillo and Juary Gomez, just called up from the GCL Phillies on Friday, provided the Cutters with a much needed boost by combining for 7.2 scoreless innings.
Castillo got the start and made it through five innings, only allowing three hits and two walks while striking out three. Gomez didn't allow a hit during 2.2 innings of relief.
Alonso doubled with one out in the seventh, and scored the Cutters first run of the game on an Edgar Duran single.
Alonso made a diving play to his left to rob Pat Irvine of a base hit in the top of the ninth but Kevin Mort scored on the play to tie the game at one, setting the stage for Alonso's heroics in the bottom of the frame.
With the victory the Cutters improve their record to 43-32, and head into the regular season finale at State College in control of their own playoff destiny.
The Jamestown Jammers defeated the Mahoning Valley Scappers 6-4 and remain a half-game behind the Cutters.
