District 4 gets two wrestling state champions
HERSHEY - District IV had two PIAA Class AA wrestling champions Saturday.
At 138 pounds it was Benton's Zain Retherford while at 195 pounds Milton's Ryan Solomon dominated his way to a 7-0 win.
Retherford faced long time foe Seth Lansberry of Line Mountain.
The two tied up early on with neither able to shoot. Then after a restart Retherford scored a takedown with 13 seconds left in the first period to take a 2-0 lead after one.
Retherford made it a 3-0 lead early in the second period with an escape.
Throughout the second period they continued to size each other up. Late in the period Lansberry got off a shot but Retherford was able to defend it then slide around Lansberry to score his second takedown of the match to go up 5-0 after four minutes.
In the third period Retherford was able to ride Lansberry the full two minutes to win his second state title with a 5-0 decision.
Solomon dominated Garrett Vulcano for his title at 195 pounds.
Pen Argyl's Michael Racciato defeated Benton's Colt Cotten for the 145 pound state title 8-2.
Racciato started quickly, scoring a takedown and near fall in the first period to go up 5-0. He then rode Cotten the entire second period to keep him scoreless. Right at the buzzer Cotten was called for potentially dangerous, giving Racciato a 6-0 lead.
Cotten got a point in the third period when Racciato was called for hands to the face.
During a quick scramble Cotten nearly got a takedown but Racciato stepped over Cotten to get out of it and scored a takedown of his own to go up 8-1.
Cotten scored an escape late to make it an 8-2 final.
At 182 pounds a late takedown by Burrell's Dakota DesLauriers gave him a 3-1 win over Muncy's Troy Hembury in the final match.
Lewisburg's Brandon Smith lost the 220 pound state title bout to Saucon Valley's Ray O'Donnell 2-0.
At 106 pounds Line Mountain's Cameron Newman fell to Bishop McDevitt's Tyshawn White 3-1 to finish with an eighth place medal.
At 120 pounds Benton's Matt Welliver scored a 5-1 decision over South Side Beaver's Nathan Reckner to take third place.
At 126 pounds Southern Columbia's Kent Lane fell to Sharon's Jarray Norris 10-5 in overtime to finish sixth.
At 132 pounds Mifflinburg's Cole Walter defeated South Park's Jake Wentzel 4-1 to take seventh place.
At 152 pounds Milton's Ryan Preisch defeated Hughesville's Kyle Barnes 3-1 for third while Southern Columbia's Blake Marks fell to Blairsville's Andrew Doak 3-2 in the seventh place match.
At 160 pounds Mifflinburg's Ty Walter defeated Ft. LeBoeuf's Taylor Fox 1-0 to take third. Benton's Jeric Kasunic fell 8-6 in the fifth place bout to Tri Valley's Ty Schoffstall.
At 195 Muncy's Skylar Ebnar won the seventh place match against Somerset's Jacob Nickelson 5-4 in ultimate tie breaker.
