First loss brings an end to Waverly's magical season
Late in the first half it looked like the Waverly Wolverines were going to be able to put a big scare into the state's second ranked team in the Section IV, Class B playoffs.
The Wolverines were down 21-18 with just a minute to go in the first half at Oneonta and Waverly was hoping to continue their perfect season into a sectional final.
However, a turnover led to an Oneonta layup and then Oneonta star Mariah Ruff got the ball in the paint and found Minni Webster for a three and it was an eight-point halftime deficit.
A quick start to the third quarter put Oneonta up by 16 before Waverly got the deficit to within 13 and had a couple of free throws.
However the Wolverines missed both and Ruff took over as Oneonta outscored Waverly 20-5 in the fourth as Waverly's season ended with a 60-30 loss.
"It's the first time in 25 years we went undefeated in the regular season and we are proud of that," Waverly coach Brian Miller said. "We just met an outstanding team that has won five sectional titles in a row and has a Division one guard, but I'm proud of them. They have nothing to be ashamed of, we came out and we just didn't play our best game tonight."
For the Wolverines the problem was shooting as they shot just 11-for-43 for the game and 4-for-24 from three.
"That's not going to win to many games against a team like this," Miller said.
Sabrina Bowman and Jenna Bowman each led Waverly with eight and Reylyn Schwartzhoff had six in the game.
Emily Walker had three for Waverly and Jordan Raupers and Victoria Cron had two each, while McKehanna Mattison had one point.
Sabrina Bowman had eight boards, two steals and two assists, Emiley Myers had three assists and Jenna Bowman had five boards and two steals.
Cron had five rebounds and Raupers had four boards.
Ruff led Oneonta with 28 points.
