Heat, tough Notre Dame squad too much for Tioga
TIOGA CENTER, N.Y. - After an opening game victory against Waverly on Tuesday, the Tioga Tigers ran into a tough Notre Dame squad, and some more hot weather, which proved to be too much in a 4-2 loss.
Notre Dame got out to a quick start as Colin White scored 3:09 into the game, but they gave a goal right back as they scored an own goal at 5:11 to allow Tioga to tie the game up.
Tioga took the lead into the half as Eric Zwierlein scored at 39:15 to put Tioga on top 2-1.
In the second half Notre Dame scored three straight goals at 48:13, 67:09 and 72:23 with White starting things off with his second goal of the game.
"It was another scorcher of a day. The game started with a 95-degree 'realfeel,'" Tioga coach James Howey said. "Notre Dame came in with a highly skilled team as usual. The game was a very physical contest. I am proud of the effort that my team gave today.
"As the game progressed the back-to-back contests in high heat began to take its toll by exaggerating our weaknesses. The squad worked through it the best they could. The brain and heart were willing, the body just couldn't perform. Fortunately we have a full week plus before our next contest."
Tioga had six shots and no corner kicks in the game and Notre Dame had 11 shots and four corners.
Sean Whitney had one save and Donnie VanDusen had four for Tioga and Will Pochal had five saves for Notre Dame.
The Tigers return to the field at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 11, against Candor.
