From June 30 through July 1 the local High Heat Travel Baseball Team of young athletes, 16 and under, received Champions of the Independence Day Blast in Palmyra. These athletes are from Horseheads, Elmira Heights, Corning and Waverly. High Heat compiled a record of 5-1-0 over the course of the weekend. This included wins over teams from New Jersey, Pennsylvania, New York, Delaware and Maryland. The team had a 4-0 streak on Sunday clinching a championship berth playing 29 innings of baseball within in a 12 hour time period in 95 degree temperatures.

Coach Thomas said, "The boys were playing their hearts out at every bat, every inning and every out, truly turning into champions. We only had ten players for the entire weekend and that was cutting it close for injuries and health, especially due to the heat. They put it all together and victory was in sight. We would like to thank all of our sponsors for their significant donations to allow us to coach these young athletes the game of baseball."
