Several local girls from the U-13 Greater Binghamton Futbol Club participated in the Abby Wambach Soccer Clinic recently. Local resident GBFC players include Taylor Reynard of Athens, Kiersten Covey of Sayre and Sophia Ellis, Waverly, N.Y.

Abby Wambach, a two-time gold medalist for the U.S. Women's soccer team, made the trip down from her native Rochester, N.Y. with national teammates Shannon Boxx and Sara Huffman for a weekend soccer clinic for youths. The clinic was held at the Greater Binghamton Sports Complex, Binghamton, N.Y. on Dec. 22 and 23.

Wambach has been on the national team since 2001 and has 152 career goals, second all-time behind Mia Hamm. Mia Hamm is one of the best-known women American soccer players of the 1990s and was a role model for Abby Wambach. The Greater Binghamton Futbol Club hosted Mia Hamm for a soccer clinic at the Greater Binghamton Sports Complex in 2011.

The girls were part of more than 300 participants with both girls and boys in attendance. Participants traveled from as far away as Florida and Colorado to take advantage of the opportunity for hands-on instruction and advice from Wambach as well as had the opportunity to play soccer with her and her fellow U.S. players Shannon Boxx and Sara Huffman during the two day soccer clinic.
