Mansfield, Canton to meet in A final
LAWRENCE - The top-seeded Mansfield Tigers had to rally from a 2-0 deficit, but managed to beat Lourdes 3-2 to reach the District Four A volleyball finals, while Canton held off Elkland in five games in the other semifinal.
Lourdes Regional took a 2-0 game lead as they won the first game 25-15 and the second game 25-23. In the third game the Tigers took control early, leading 15-8 at one point, but Lourdes fought back to tie it at 25. Mansfield managed to get two points, though, and win it 28-26.
In the fourth game, Lourdes looked tired as Mansfield raced out to another big lead and won 25-13.
In the final game, both teams were tied at 11 at one point, but it was the Tigers who had a stronger finish, winning 15-11.
Mansfield won despite an "off" night by Taryn Rumsey.
"I had an off night," Rumsey said. "Our team has worked together and can make up for anybody's mistakes, including my own."
Ramsey said that they didn't play well the first two games.
"We weren't playing together," she said. "We didn't come ready to play and were not focused."
Teammate Kim Guthrie was excited to be in the district final.
"It was great, amazing," she said. "When we had that six-point lead, I knew we would win. We had the momentum."
Guthrie also thinks they have what it takes to top Canton.
"I have faith in my team," she said. "We have what it takes to beat them."
For Mansfield, Rumsey had eight points, two aces, 36 digs, 19 kills and one block; Tanya DeWalt had one point, three digs, 21 kills and four blocks; Allison Seymour had 11 points, two aces and 18 digs; Kim Guthrie had 19 points, two aces, 15 digs and three kills and ChaNiesha Morgan had six points, 18 digs and one kill.
Also for the Tigers, Chelsia Giles had eight points, one ace and 34 assists; Taylor Kurzjewski had nine kills; Courtney Dibble had three points and five assists and Laura Brennan had a block.
In the other semi-final game, Canton came out on top 3-2.
The Warriors were down big in the first game but rallied to win 29-27, while Elkland took the second game 25-18. Canton took the third game 25-11 with the Rams knotting it up 25-23. Canton won the decisive game 15-7.
For Canton, Katie Ward had 16 points, six aces and 14 assists; Brianna Watkins had 13 points, three aces, 18 kills and 12 digs; Kristin Route had 12 points, five aces and 40 assists; while Tom Price had 19 kills.
Also for the Warriors, Rachel Holmes, Morgan Palmer and Cortney Tice had seven points each, while Holmes had eight kills and a block and while Tice had eight digs. Lindsay Moyer also had eight kills and a block. Katie Ward had 12 digs as well.
For the Rams, Logan Collier had 21 points and eight aces, Karlie Guasline had 15 points and seven assists; Ashley Carl had 11 kills, Brittany Carl had eight kills and 42 digs; Kerri Tubbs had 17 digs and 10 assists and Lori Tubbs had four blocks.
Mansfield and Canton will play for the District Four A title at 6 p.m. Thursday at Williamson. The AA District Four final follows between Towanda and Wellsboro.
