Mansfield evens up NTL West race; Rams clinch spot in districts
MANSFIELD - Over the past three seasons the Mansfield Tigers and Wellsboro Green Hornets traded regular season victories.
And, over the past three seasons they wound up finishing the year in a one-game playoff for the NTL West, because neither team has lost another league game in that span.
On Friday the Tigers helped keep one part of that streak alive as they evened up the season series with the Green Hornets, winning 46-35.
Finding out if their will be another playoff won't be determined until the teams finish out the regular season next week, and it will be no easy task.
On Friday the Tigers got 19 points, 11 rebounds and five assists, against no turnovers, from Marquis Delgado, and Alec Simpson had 14 points in the game.
Taylor Hillson had seven points, six boards, two steals and he drew a charge and Taylor Swingle, Reece Correll and Justin Berkowitz each finished with two points.
Correll had four boards and Sam Rotella had seven rebounds and three blocks.
"It was nice to win our seventh straight and nice to grab a share of first place at the moment," Mansfield coach Kipper Burleigh said. "It is really nice to defend our home court."
Wellsboro got 10 points from Jordan Jackson and Sam Mitchell finished with seven points. Dylan Prough had six points, Matt Reese had five points, Mike Pietripola had four points and Joey Doganiero finished with three points.
Both teams face North Penn next week, starting with Mansfield hosting them on Monday. The Panthers enter the week needing one win to clinch a spot in districts.
"It's going to be a tough game," Burleigh said. "It's nice that we have them at our place, but it will be tough."
Mansfield won the JV game 54-30 with Eric Brennan scoring 12.
Wyalusing 79, Sayre 62
Aaron Johnson netted a game high 38 points Friday to lead the Rams to a in over the Sayre Redskins to improve to 11-9 on the season with two games remaining. The win clinches a district playoff spot for the Rams.
Also scoring for the Rams were Kye Novak with 14, Jeremy Allyn with 13, Cody Pickett with eight, Domenic Ciccolini with four and Mitchell Picket with two.
Johnson paced the Rams with 6 steals while Novak added four, Cody Pickett had two and Mitchell Pickett, Jonah Shotwell, Jeremy Allyn and Domenic Ciccolini each had one.
Allyn led the Rams with four assists while Mitchell Pickett and Novak added three, Johnson had two and Cody Pickett and Domenic Ciccolini each had one.
Johnson led the Rams with 13 rebounds followed by Allyn with nine, Novak with five, Ciccolini with four, Cody Pickett with two and Mitchell Pickett with one.
Trey Hildebrandt paced the Redskins in scoring with 18 points while Nate Williams added 16.
Riley Card had 15 points for Sayre, while Tyler Williams and Jared Donovan each finished with four points.
Alex Lyons and Adam Wampole had two points each for the Redskins and John Shaw had one point.
The Rams will return to action on Monday when they play host to Athens.
Athens 82, Troy 35
The Wildcats outscored Troy 45-15 in the first half on their way to the win.
Adam McCauley led Athens with 14 points and Ray McDougan had 11 points while Craig Moore finished with 10 points for the Wildcats.
Robert Fauver had nine points, Luke Wright had eight points and Jon Canfield, Mark Wright, Curt Moore and Brandon Fauver all finished with six points.
Troy Stivason had four points in the game and Garrett Clark finished with two points.
McCauley had a double-double adding 11 boards and three assists and Stivason had three assists, while Brandon Fauver also had three assists.
Clark had eight boards and seven assists, Robert Fauver had four assists, Mark Wright had seven rebounds, three assists and five blocks and Luke Wright had three assists.
McDougan finished with six boards and two steals, Canfield had two steals and Craig Moore had five boards.
Troy was led by Evan Polly and Chad Cole with 10 points each, while Brandon Mattocks and Jed Wright each had five points.
Quentin Wandell finished with three points for Troy and Tanner Bulkley had two points.
Athens won the JV game 66-34. Brandon Fauver led Athens with 13, Stag Shadduck had 12 and Zane Vargason finished with 10 points.
Athens is at Wyalusing on Monday.
Towanda 67, Canton 51
The Black Knights outscored Canton 22-12 in the third quarter on their way to the victory.
Towanda was led by Casey Huff with 21 points and Nolyn Chaffee and Mason Roof each finished with nine points, with Roof adding seven boards.
Joel Miller had eight points and 10 rebounds for Towanda and Jake Serrano-McEwen had six points, while David Rodenhizer finished with five points.
Garrett Mosier had four points for Towanda, Robbie Abrams finished with three points and Brandon Dinelli had two points.
Canton was led by West Moore and Tim Bassett with 12 points each and Ryan Ball had 10 points. Emmett Watson had nine points for the Warriors and Eddie Larcom finished with eight points.
Towanda won the JV game 52-28 with Tristan James scoring 18 to lead the Black Knights.
Towanda is at NEB on Monday.
Galeton 43, NEB 32
Galeton held the Panthers to 11 first-half points in the win.
Galeton was led by Logan Smith with 17 and Dakota Shadle with 10 in the win. Nick Hand had eight points, Bob Williams finished with six points and Dan Hatch had two points.
Northeast Bradford got 16 points from Todd Bonin and Davis Young had 10 points. Shawn Hakes had four points for Northeast Bradford and Ryan Horn finished with two points.
Galeton won the JV game 44-22.
North Penn 77, Liberty 30
The Panthers got 23 points from Dan Proughty and 11 from Jason DeHaven in the victory.
Kannen Arrendondo had seven points and Brad Brubaker and Dayton Wood each had six points for North Penn.
Brandon Carlsen and Cody Crum had five points each, Ryan Martin had four points and Colin Crig and Shawn Garrett had three points each, while Jason DeHaven and Andrew Craig both finished with two points.
Martin had 10 boards and Proughty had six assists.
Liberty was led by Jacob Spring with 17 and Cody Schmouder had six points, while Cody Firtz had five points. Kenny Kreger and J.J. Walker had one point each.
North Penn won the JV game.
North Penn is at Mansfield on Monday.
Williamson 72, CV 41
The Warriors clinched a spot in districts as they got 34 points from Derek Vargeson and Ryan Bidlack had 19 points, while Devon Smith had 10 in the win.
Trevor Adriance finished with eight points for Williamson and Shea Daley finished with one points.
CV got 14 points from Mitchell Dent and Luke Plummer had eight points, while Landon Pearce finished with six points.
Justin Post had five points, Josh Nudd and Gavin Howe had three points each and Allen Wood had two points.
Williamson won the JV game 37-27 with Canyon Black leading Williamson with 14.
Williamson is at Galeton on Monday.
Notre Dame 71, Newfield 69, OT
With 5-foot-8-inch senior Corey Hayes hitting seven threes on his way to 25 points on senior day, Newfield gave the Crusaders a big scare.
But, a double-double by Shane Manning and a 17-point night from Matt Davis helped Notre Dame escape with the win.
Manning had 18 points and 11 rebounds, along with two assists, and Davis had the 17 points in the win. Brian Brown had 12 points and Tom Agan finished with 10 points, while Darius Garvin finished with nine points. Shawn Brown had three points and Derek Marshall had two points.
Agan had four steals and Garvin had six assists.
Notre Dame won the JV game to cap an undefeated regular season and they travel to either Whitney Point or Dryden at 6 p.m. Wednesday for the IAC Championship game.
Spencer Van-Etten 67, Tioga 51
The Tigers got 19 from Eric Zwierlein and Troy Rogers had 14 but it wasn't enough on Friday.
Zach Williams and Dalton Wojcuich each had six points and Sean Whitney finished with four points, while Cody Bennett had two points.
Gino Leonardi led Spencer with 29 points.
Spencer won the JV game 54-42 and JOhn Dougherty had 11 to lead Tioga.
GIRLS
Muncy 51, Sullivan County 42, OT
The Tigers gave one of the top challengers in districts in Class A a huge scare, outscoring them 20-15 in the second half to force overtime.
The Griffins came up short in the extra period, getting outscored 9-0.
Sullivan County was led by Alyssa McDonald with 15 points and Justine McCarty had 12 points.
Addie Jordan had eight points for Sullivan County and Shelby Zeller and Meredith Lambert each had three points, while Brianna Baumunk had one point.
Jordan Jones led Muncy with 18 points.
Waverly 75, Edison 39
The Wolverines outscored Edison 26-5 in the second quarter on their way to the win.
Reylyn Schwartzhoff led Waverly with 20 points and Sabrina Bowman had 14 points, while Cassidy Farr and Jenna Bowman each finished with 10 points.
Kylie Newman and Victoria Cron had seven points each in the game and Emily Walker had five points, while Emiley Myers finished with two points.
Farr had nine boards and four assists, Sabrina Bowman finished with nine steals and six assists and Walker had six rebounds.
Jenna Bowman had five assists, Schwartzhoff had eight boards, Cron had nine rebounds and five steals and Newman finished with three steals and three rebounds.
Edison got 11 points from Kourtney Evans and 10 from Paige Tomkins.
Waverly won the JV game 70-19 with Jordan Raupers and McKhenna Mattison each scoring 14 points.
The Waverly JV team finishes the regular season 17-0 and will travel to either Whitney Point or Lansing on Thursday for the IAC Championship game.
The Waverly varsity team will finish the regular season with a 6 p.m. varsity only start at Johnson City on Wednesday.
Tioga 57, Spencer Van-Etten 35
The Tigers got 22 points from Hannah Manwaring and Emily Schweiger had 11 points in the win.
Callie Patsellis had eight points and Natalie Burns, Sierra Beebe, Sarah Whitney and Maddie Tinney had four points each for Tioga.
Patsellis had seven steals and three assists, Burns had four steals and nine boards and Manwaring had seven rebounds and four steals, while Whitney had three steals, four boards and five assists.
Tioga won the JV game 43-32 with Deanna Hutchison leading Tioga with 14.
Tioga plays in the IAC Small School Championshipst at 6 p.m. on Wednesday against Marathon at TCCC.
