Mansfield men fall late at Millersville
Joe Bell scored 20 of his 24 points in the second half but Millersville connected on all four free throws over the last 76 seconds to pull out a 65-62 PSAC East win Wednesday night.
Mansfield, which trailed 29-22 at halftime, took a 57-52 lead with just under five minutes to play on a free throw by Charles Pemberton. After Millersville battled back to tie the game at 57-57, Bell nailed a 3-pointer with just over three minutes to give Mansfield a 60-57 advantage.
However Bell, the PSAC's leading scorer, was whistled for two quick fouls - the second an offensive foul - over the next minute to give him four for the game.
Millersville took the lead at 61-60 on a layup by Brandon Brown with just over two minutes remaining before Bell returned to the game to hit a layup putting Mansfield up 62-61.
But Millersville's Kelvin Parker went 4-4 from the free throw line down the stretch while Mansfield missed a layup and suffered a turnover, giving the Marauders at 65-62 lead with seven seconds to play.
Mansfield got a look for a tying 3-pointer, but Ryan Krawczeniuk's shot fell just short as the buzzer sounded.
The game featured 19 lead changes and 10 ties. Millersville took 29 3-pointers hitting 10 of them to Mansfield 5-12 from beyond the arch.
Bell led Mansfield with 24 points while Pemberton recorded his team-best 8th double-double of the season with 14 points and 13 rebounds.
Parker was the only Millersville player in double figures with a game-high 28 points.
The loss, coupled with Kutztown's 68-65 win over Cheyney puts Mansfield two games behind both Millersville and Kutztown. Mansfield has three games remaining in the regular season while Kutztown and Millersville each have four games remaining.
Mansfield hosts Lock Haven this Saturday.
