Match-ups to possibly decide league titles this week

There are two weeks left in the regular season and league races are getting tighter and tighter.
Monday, February 8
Girls Basketball
Sullivan County at Montgomery
The Griffins take their two-game win streak to Montgomery today. Sullivan won the first match-up 40-37 in Laporte.
While Reilly Gavitt (15.3 points per game) still leads the team in scoring Alyssa McDonald stepped up and was the leading scorer last week at 11 points per game, including averaging 13 in a two game span.
Tuesday, February 9
Girls Basketball
Wellsboro at Cowanesque Valley
This game could decided the league title as CV, undefeated in NTL West play, hosts Wellsboro, who has one loss.
The Green Hornets' Kelly Hebert had a strong week, last week, as she had double-doubles. Hebert had 18 points and 11 boards against Liberty and 12 points and 14 boards against North Penn. She also had 13 points in a win over Elkland.
The Phelps' are the top two scorers for CV along with Stephanie Dawson.
Towanda at Wyalusing
The Rams had a big win last week against Sayre while the Black Knights look to stay on top of the NTL East along with the Wildcats. Towanda won the first match-up 69-59.
The Black Knights have three players averaging in double figures: Kylee Sutton (23.5), Ali Wickwire (13.3) and Mariah Monahan (14.4).
For Wyalusing Gabby Edsell was the high scorer last week at 10 points per game while Erica Crawford had 9.3.
Troy at Athens
The Wildcats sit atop the league standings while Troy hopes to continue to good play of late.
Athens is coming off a big win over rival Sayre that saw Taylor Clark score 24 points. Clark averaged 23.5 points per game last week.
Also for Athens freshman Monica Dougherty is averaging 8.1 points per game.
The Trojans went 3-0 last week topping, Canton, Wyalusing and Coudersport.
Three players averaged double figures in the wins for the Trojans: Meghan Manning (15.3), Lauren Gustin (15.3) and Courtney Mattocks (10.7)
Boys Basketball
Tioga at SVE
The Tigers travel to SVE to face the division leaders.
Last time the two teams met SVE won 55-41.
Sophomore Eric Zwierlein (18.7) continues to be the Tigers' top scorer while forward Larry Brink has averaged 12.3 points per game over the last three contests.
Wednesday, February 10
Boys Basketball
The Trojans are still undefeated in the NTL East but the Wildcats, who are coming off a win over their cross-town rivals Sayre, will look to change that. Troy won the last meeting.
After an emotional win over Canton where Jordan Brunelle got the school's scoring record it took a second half surge for the Trojans to top the Rams.
Brunelle and Chris Stroup both put up over 20 points per game for the Trojans last week: Brunelle averaged 24 and Stroup 21.
The Wildcats rely on the trio of Mike Williams (11.4), Jarred Gambrell (10.7) and Mark Wright (10.2) to score while having one of the more stingier defenses in the area.
Northeast Bradford at Sayre
The Redskins two league losses while the Panthers are hoping to gain some momentum heading into district play.
Sayre lost to Wyalusing and Athens last week while the Panthers lost their lone game to the Wildcats. In the last meeting between these two Sayre edged out a win.
Taylor Skerpon has emerged as the Redskins' go to players, averaging 19 points per game over the last four while the Panthers' go to player is Rob Robbins, whose put up 14.3 over the last three.
Thursday, February 11
Girls Basketball
Athens at Towanda
This game could decide the NTL East for the girls as both teams only have one loss each at the top of the standings. The Black Knights won the last meeting 45-33 in Athens.
In that game Mariah Monahan had her highest point total of the season with 17 while Kylee Sutton had 13. For the Wildcats Monica Dougherty was the high scorer with 16 while Taylor Clark had nine.
Cowanesqe Valley at Mansfield
The Tigers look to get revenge from a previous loss against CV.
Mansfield's Tanya DeWalt has found her rhythm again, averaging 27 points per game over the last two while Taryn Rumsey has averaged 12.
Friday, February 12
Boys Basketball
Towanda at Athens
The Wildcats look to get revenge over Towanda from a loss earlier in the year. The Black Knights won at home 63-53.
Towanda is led by the backcourt duo of Nate Bennett (14.9), who leads the area in three with 54 this season, and Anthony Ventello (14.7).
Girls Basketball
Waverly at Newark Valley
As the Wolverines try to finish the season strong they will look to earn a win at Newark Valley.
Waverly has seen starter Molly Walker return and play well, averaging six points per game since coming back while Kelly Lyon (13.9) and Meghan Sutryk (13.1) both average in double figures.
WARRIOR STAT GETTERS
Corey Peterson leads the Canton boys team in assists at 2.8 per game, while Kyle Thompson leads the team in rebounds at nine per game. In steals, Josh Smith is at the top at 2.1 per game.
GIRLS PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Troy's Meghan Manning was strong last week as the Trojans went 3-0. She averaged 15.3 points per game last week and had two double-digit rebounding games.
Manning had 11 points against Canton, then had 19 points, 12 boards and six steals in a win over the Rams. In the final game of the week, Manning had 16 points and 13 boards in Troy's win over Coudersport.
GIRLS TEAM OF THE WEEK
The Wellsboro Green Hornets went 3-0 last week to set up a possible league deciding game against CV Tuesday.
They defeated Elkland 54-20, North Penn 47-33 and Liberty 53-15.
BOYS PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Mike Williams averaged a double-double for the Wildcats this week in their wins over the Panthers and Redskins.
Against Sayre Williams had 17 points and 11 boards along with three blocks while against Northeast he had 20 points and 10 boards.
BOYS TEAM OF THE WEEK
The Trojans stayed undefeated in the league last week while also having a milestone broken.
Troy topped Canton 75-56 as Jordan Brunelle became the leading scorer at the school, then managed to hold off a tough Rams team 74-62.
WOMENS PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Mansfield's Mallory Hafer set a team record last week, hitting four threes in the second half against Bloomsburg to surpass former teammate Alicia Espigh. Hafer's total of 173 now leads the Mounties.
Hafer was also named to the ESPN the Magazine All-Academic Team last week.
WOMENS TEAM OF THE WEEK
While Mansfield didn't get a win last week, they did have one team record broken while Mallory Moore continued her strong play, nabbing her seventh double-double of the season against Bloomsburg.
MENS TEAM OF THE WEEK
Cornell's story book season continued as they defeated both Yale and Brown.
Against Yale seniors Ryan Wittman, Jeff Foote and Louis Dale each had 15 points in the win, while against Brown Foote had 17 points and nine boards to get the win.
MENS PLAYER OF THE WEEK
While Penn State lost both games last week, Talor Battle continued his strong play of late. Against Minnesota Battle had 20 points while in the loss to Ohio State he had 24 points, nine boards and seven assists.
KYLE DOUGHERTY UPDATE
It was a thrilling week for the Sayre native as Dougherty had a career high 14 points in a loss to DePaul last week. She shot 6-of-8 from the field while adding three boards.
