McGloin set for second NFL game
So, what will Matt McGloin do for an encore?
A week after giving the Oakland Raiders a jolt during a preseason-opening win over the Dallas Cowboys, the free-agent quarterback is expected to see plenty of action in his second NFL game.
Tonight, the Raiders visit the New Orleans Saints with a 7 p.m. kickoff.
"I am definitely looking forward to it," McGloin said. "Getting that first game under your belt, I can come out and relax and just play."
In the victory over Dallas, McGloin entered in the second half with the Raiders trailing. He went 4 for 7 for 78 yards in the third quarter, completing two long passes to fellow rookie Brice Butler, including a 30-yard touchdown.
"I thought he held his poise in the pocket," Raiders' head coach Dennis Allen said. "I thought he did a nice job of making some good decisions. He made a heck of a throw there to Brice Butler, who also made a great catch on the play.
"The thing that you see with Matt is that he is composed and he does have poise in the pocket. He doesn't get rattled, and for a guy that is an undrafted free agent, to handle himself the way he's handled himself in pressure situations has been a nice surprise."
Once again, Matt Flynn will start against the Saints. Terrelle Pryor and McGloin will share time, and fourth-round draft pick Tyler Wilson will play in the fourth quarter.
McGloin, the West Scranton graduate who went from walk-on to scholarship player and record-setter at Penn State, remains focused through the four-player competition at quarterback.
"I have to fix some things and move better in the pocket, but overall I was pleased with how I played," McGloin said. "I thought had command of the huddle and was confident."
Against the Saints, the Raiders will face an aggressive defense led by coordinator Rob Ryan. New Orleans is coming off a 17-13 win over Kansas City in its first preseason game.
"We want to build off of the positives we had in the first game," McGloin said. "We didn't have too many mental mistakes. The quarterbacks made some good decisions and everybody completed passes. We are just looking to keep working hard and get more experience."
