McHugh leads B-Mets to win
Collin McHugh struck out a season-high eight New Hampshire Fisher Cats and the B-Mets scored five runs in the sixth inning to earn a 6-2 win Monday afternoon at NYSEG Stadium. McHugh allowed just two runs over eight innings, his longest performance of the season.
After facing one over the minimum through three, McHugh hit a speed bump in the fourth. Two singles and a hit batsman loaded the bases, and Kevin Howard delivered with an RBI single to give the Fisher Cats the lead. Brad Glenn ripped a sac fly to center to make it 2-0.
Meanwhile, the B-Mets' offense was stymied by New Hampshire starter Deck McGuire for more than half the game. The righty retired the first 15 B-Mets he faced before things unraveled in the sixth.
McGuire hit Reese Havens to start the inning and walked Kai Gronauer to put two aboard. A sac bunt set the table for Sean Kazmar who broke up the no-hitter and got Binghamton on the board with a single to the left side. Josh Rodriguez tied the game and ended McGuire's day with a run-scoring single to right.
Aaron Loup entered and struggled with his command. The lefty hit Reyes with a pitch to load the bases and surrendered an RBI single to Jefry Marte that gave the B-Mets a 3-2 lead. Loup capped his day by issuing consecutive bases-loaded walks to Juan Lagares and Reese Havens. Ronald Uviedo entered and extinguished the flames by striking out Gronauer.
McHugh (5-3) easily shook off his difficult fourth inning and capped his day with four shutout frames, facing just one over the minimum. Excluding the fourth, McHugh faced no more than four batters in any inning. The righty gave up five hits and walked only one in the win.
The B-Mets added their final run on a single by Gronauer in the eighth and looked to Adrian Rosario in the ninth. The righty walked two, but induced Brad Glenn to line into a game-ending double play to post a scoreless frame. McGuire (2-5) suffered his third loss against the B-Mets.
The B-Mets (24-25) head south to take on the Reading Phillies in a three-game series that starts Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m. RHP Miguel Batista takes the mound in a rehab start for the B-Mets against RHP Julio Rodriguez. The Horizons Federal Credit Union pre-game show begins at 6:50 p.m. on ESPN 1360 WYOS.
